lost my receipt, help ?

I bought a CD from Tesco as a Christmas pressie now the CD comes with a DVD as well. Tried the DVD tonight and one of the tracks is missing it just skips onto the next one but I cannot find my receipt.

Will Tesco replace without a receipt, bearing in mind it is this time of year and we dont always keep our receipts.

What do you reckon ?

Sorry if this is wrong forum but I couldnt find where to put it.

  • I think that if you only want a replacement then you will get one. I've read several stories of people taking back stuff without a receipt and done it myself too- the only problem would be if you want your money back.I think they would give you an alternative cd/dvd if you don't want to risk another one.

Do you have proof of purchace like a credit card statement ? If you used your clubcard i think they can trace it back as well :)

I was standing next to someone in the CS queue at Tescos this morning and a lady there wanted to exchange a CD and they wouldn't do it. CS said "cannot do anything without a receipt". Saying that - if item is faulty (which this wasn't - the lady just wanted to exchange for something else), then you should really be able to get a direct replacement I would have thought....

You do not need a receipt to obtain a refund for faulty goods. Little known fact, a shop is not legally obliged to give you a receipt ( so in reverse cannot demand one for faulty items) from memory this is covered under the sale of goods act 1979 (ammended). i had a major row with the manager at our local argos about this as they said "it is our policy only to refund with receipt"

I pointed out that it may well be their policy but it is not the law! consequently they backed down. I seem to recall that the act mentions the onus lies with the retailer to prove that you didn't buy it from them rather than for you to prove that you did. That said, if you have credit card statement, cheque stub etc that you can show that will make your life easier. It is faulty you are entitled to a full refund assuming that you bought it (ie when we get presents and want to exchange them the contract is between the person that bought it and the shop rather than you and the shop)

These rights do not apply when you are exchanging something because you don't want it. The shop has no obligation to change it for you, however some companies such as Argos operate a 16 day no quibble exchange to encourage us to chose them over their competitors. Wooloworths on the other hand do not, as i found to my cost this morning. My son received duplicated (sealed) presents for his PSP i tried to exchange but was told they wouldn't do it without a receipt. Worth bearing in mind if you are buying presents for other people in the future.

I had a smilar problem with a sports shop in high street, until I quoted the law, they not onliged to supply a recipt as long as you can prove you purchases it. IE friend, or person with you, card statement etc.

The shop back down after the assistant was stroppy with me, and I asked to speak to manager.

    Hi,

If you bought it from that same Tesco store recently and remember how you paid for it, then Tesco can print off a copy of your receipt. They just need to know your card number (if you paid by credit or debit card), and when you visited the store (down to a couple of hours), and they can trace the transaction and print off a receipt for it.

They have done this for me a couple of times at the Bar Hill (Cambridge) Extra store, although staff at some other Tesco stores have sometimes not been so helpful......
