Easyjet Mastercard and Purchase Protection

Options
Hi Gang,

Apologies if this query has been raised in the past.

I have a easyjet Mastercard issued by Citicards. I purchased two items on this card that were subsequently stolen. Upon ringing them up to ask for a claim form I was informed that the Purchase Protection Insurance was no longer available and was withdrawn in May of this year. I opened up my account in April 2008. For information that total cost of the two items stolen was just under 600 pounds

I checked thier website (http://www.citibank.co.uk/personal/cards/easyjet/insurance.htm?merchant=citi) and as of today's date it is still listed as being a service offered as part of the card. I was never informed of thier decision to withdraw this service back in May nor today. The Welcome Pack that I received when I opened my account also lists the Purchase Protection/Extended Warranty as part of the benefits of having such a card.

Does anyone know how best I can tackle this? I intend on writing to CitiFinancial and telling them how I feel, but wanted to know if someone has had similar experiences and how best to approach this.

If this is a dead end and there is no avenue to explore this further then that is fine as long as I know where I stand legally, and if a challenge is worthwhile or not.

Thanks everybody!

  • I have the citi Aadvantage credit card, and they did have the extended warranty as well but I did get the info in the post saying they were stopping it
  • Hi battyboimatt,

Thanks for the info. Was this in a letter format or a terms and conditions document that they sent out to you?

    Cheers

Did you have to register the items with them (or their insurance company) to qualify for the cover? Simply purchasing goods on the card might not automatically qualify the goods for the insurance cover.
  • Hi normanmark,

The welcome pack just said that any item was covered from accidental damage/theft/fire if it was purchased on the card. No mention of registering anything. Any item that was damaged/stolen within thirty days of purchase was covered under the card.

You would've had to registration only for extended warranty purposes.

    Cheers

Give them a call just for some clarification!
  • I did!

Twice over in fact. Said exact same thing, that the purchase protection was scrapped in May of this year. Some consolation for me, no notification or otherwise and the website still lists it as a benefit for holding a citicard Mastercard!

Not sure if there is anything I can do other than write to them and explain this, and/or fight it out all the way.
  • I´m with Citibank just now because I´m away from home. I really had trouble finding a bank that could meet all of my needs and Citibank did. I´m surprised there are problems like this though, they seemed great when I opened my account. Hope you get it all sorted. Lindsay

  • Hi Big Fella,

I've got a Citibank easyJet Mastercard. I only applied for mine in July and was not aware of any purchases being protected against anything, except the usual legally required minimum stuff protecting you from traders going bankrupt etc. I just followed the link from easyJet's website and the only promotion relates to airmiles and a free flight in certain circumstances. I also clicked on the link you pasted above and could only see insurance relating to card repayment protection, card protection (against loss/theft misuse of your card) and travel insurance. But on closer inspection they seem to have left this bit in, probably by mistake....

"4. EXTENDED WARRANTY, PURCHASE PROTECTION & PRICE PROTECTION

This insurance is free as part of your credit card.

    Statement of Demands and Needs

We have not provided you with any advice or recommendation as to whether this policy is suitable for your specific needs. The product is free as part of the credit card and meets the demands and needs of customers wishing to extend warranties on purchase of eligible goods made by use of the Citi Card. In addition customers wish to enjoy cover for theft, accidental damage and fire within the first 30 days of purchase and price protection within the first 60 days."

This is a straight forward cut and paste by me, it doesn't appear to make sense on it's own. I have had a slight issue with Citicard myself recently and I doubt you'd get anything from them other than a written apology admitting nothing.

I do recall receiving some altered terms of use on my card quite recently. I chose not to read it as I assumed it related to interest rates, but also this was well after April and May of this year.

    Cheers, Ian.

  • Hiya,

    Thanks for the info Mrs_ryan.

Can I just ask when exactly did you receive the notification that they were stopping the insurance schemes on the card?

I only ask as I only got the card in April and with that I got nothing about such services being terminated only a welcome pack in which they were boldly advertising this. If you got this before May then there is some scope to chase up on.

Appreciate you may not remember exactly when it was, ie. was it before April or not, but any help would be greatly received.

    Thank you.
