How to clean an oven microwave

I must admit this entirely my own fault, I clean the sides and bottom of the microwave but as it's quite high up i always forget to look at the roof.

I realised yesterday that the top of the microwave and the griller element is completly covered in burnt stuff, I don't think i could use the grill in it as it is covered in hurnt/rusty stuff.

It's only a year old and cost quite a bit, can anyone suggest a method of safely cleaning the inside and the element?
