Can I find out my wireless network password?

I have a belkin wireless router which (according to the settings) has WEP security on it (although I thought it was WPA, this is what I have saved the password under on my computer!).

Anyway, my sister has brought her laptop to my house and wants to also use the wireless network. When she tries to connect it asks her for the passcode, but then after she types in the 64 characters it says it has to be either 5 or 9 characters or 19 or 23 (I think).

Is there a way I can find out what the passcode is without having to change it or anything? I had a lot of trouble setting up this router when I got it and in the end had to get my brother's friend to have a look, so I dont want to cause any more problems with it if I fiddle! I am thinking he may possibly have put a different passcode in when he sorted it out, but Im not sure and think he probably would have mentioned it! Unfortunately I have no way of contacting him, and it was about a 9 months ago anyway.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be glad to hear them!

Check the manual. Its possible that you can sort something if you plug the modem straight into the computer and use a web broswer to visit: 192.168.1.1 this should (might!) give you a menu and options to configure your router.

If that doesn't yield anything, check the belkin website for a user manual. Be sure to have your model number to hand.

  • Look for a label on the back of the router, it should be there with ssid and wep
  • Hi Domokun, that was a speedy reply!

I have managed to access the settings by typing in 192.168.2.1 but it doesnt show me what my passcode is, only has blank boxes to type in a new one. Which I am too scared to do in case I mess up the whole thing!

there should be something mentioned in the manual about the default password or do you have an ethernet cable so you could connect the laptop to the router
  • So if I connect the laptop directly to the router it will show me the password rather than just blank boxes?

I dont think there was a manual with the router, it might be online, I will just go and have a look.

I think the password is one that I put in, not the default, well it should be anyway!

Not sure, especially without knowing he model number of the router. As suggested above, they are sometimes, but not always, printed on the side of the box itself.

Looking on the net seems to suggest that you can simply change the WEP key without needing the old one, its not like a password, but don't forget to write it down!

You can also Factory reset it, I think, if it goes wrong, and failing that you can call Belkin, so go wild and try typing in a new one.

If it asks for a password try username: Admin password: Password

With or without caps, trial and error.
