Hi
I share my horse with a lady and its great, I dont charge though she just pays for his shoes every 6-8 weeks, but im lucky my father in law is a farmer, all i asked was she got herself insured to ride him and thats it. She has her own insurance if she has an accident. My horse loves her too and she loves my horse as much as her husband lol so ive been really lucky0 -
I look after a friends horse once a week, no £ involved as she just appreciates the extra help.
I don't have insurance though - didn't think it was needed. The horse is insured by the owner0 -
Insurance - be aware of what the differences are.
BHS gold membership includes public liability insurance and personal accident insurance. Its important for the rider to have public liability because if there is an accident involving a 3rd party while rider is in charge of the horse, the rider themself may get sued for not being in proper control of the horse, and this would cover the rider against that.
The public liability insurance the owner hopefully has for the horse usually covers if the horse causes damage to a 3rd party of its own accord, e.g. escapes and otherwise safe field and runs into a car, or if it is under the owner's control at the time. The owner's policy can also include vets fees, loss of use etc, in which case the owner needs to make sure that the policy allows riders who aren't the owner, as some do, some don't. Most insurance policies tken out on the horse (rather than the rider) will not cover the rider if it is not the owner.
Some horse insurance policies even state that to insure a horse for a rider that is not the owner, that rider must have public liability insurance.
Hope that helps0
