christmas presents for nursery staff

My dd's both go to nursery and I really need some ideas of what to get the nursery girls for christmas. They're all really lovely girls and I would love to get them something really nice but I'm pretty broke at the moment! I dont want to just get them a tin of sweets or something as I think its a bit naff and also the nursery manager takes all 'group' gifts away then then they raffle them among the staff on the last day of work. Basically, i want to get them individual gifts that show my gratitude to them and that they really like, but that arent expensive. there are 5 girls in dd1s room and 3 in dd2s room, all aged under 30. The last few of years I have bought them Lush gift boxes each, little purses each and last year i bought them diamante keyrings.

Any suggetions would be much appreciated!

thanks guys

  • As a teacher myself, I advise avoiding the usual chocolates, smellies and candles, I get so many of these I end up sharing them with friends and family. Booze is always gratefully received, even a cheap bottle of wine can be made special if you put a mulled wine sachet or cinnamon stick around the neck with a ribbon. I am going to make shortbread biscuits with my dd for her teachers as there are 6 in her class in the course of a week and I can't afford to buy them all something. I'll probably sandwich the biccies together with jam like the Linzer biscuits in Costa coffee to posh them up a bit.
  • when my eldest was at nursery we got a letter saying that the kids were not allowed to get staff individual gifts, but a box or tin of sweets/biscuits for all of them in the room.

My daughter and I made biscuits for her nursery staff when she left to go to school. We then put them in little cello bags which I'd read about on this website, then stuck stickers round the bag, and tied a gift tag (handmade) and written by my daughter to each one with a ribbon. The staff were really touched that we'd put so much effort in to it and it cost us next to nothing as we already had the biscuit ingredients (Twink's hobnobs receipe also from this site), the stickers and just bought the bags from e-bay. We also gave each member of staff a box of thorntons chocolates each (bought half price on one of their offers). My daughter was thrilled too as she helped make the biscuits, decorated the bags and wrote the tags so really felt involved.
  • For my dd's teachers i am making the snowmans soup and putting it in a xmas mug or a plain mug that my dd decorate with cermaic pens then wrapping in Cellophane and a bow.

I thought it be nice for the teachers to have nice warm hot choccie in their break / dinnetime or after a stressful day. I may also add couple homemade cookies too that i will let my daughters make!

I think its a useful pressie that also my daughters (aged 5yrs and 8 yrs) can contribute to.

My daughter works in a nursery and they have a "raffle" of all the biscuits and chocolates brought in. I know they would really appreciate something different like snowman soup.
  • As a nursery nurse, the things I love to receive as gifts are anything homemade or with a photo of the children on, personally I love to get flowers/plants. Sounds silly but pens! (If your DD's nursery is anything like ours, somebody always "borrow's" your pen!) Also how about a mug for the staff room or something like a cheap vase or something like that.

To be honest, the staff will appreciate anything you give. It's lovely when a parent just says or writes in a lovely handmade card (by the child) "Thank you for all you've done for (child's name) this year, they are so happy and love coming to nursery and are learning so much" That, to me is the best present I can ever receive.

I've got 5 to do for so I'm going with a mug filled with some nice sweets, a snowman soup and yule log made with fannels then I'll cellophane it.
