  • You can normally tell if a car has been looked after by the condition and the service history.
Look at the body work and see if its in good condition, look carefully to see the gaps between the doors and the wings are differnt indicating a smash at some point.
look at the interior and see if its in good condition. Look at the stearing wheel and see if its realy shiny? If the car says 40.000 miles adn the stearing wheel has no grip then its doen a lot more than 40.000.
Feel the carpets and see if they are damp wet? indicatign a leak. Dose it smell funny?.
Check all the lights and elctrical systems in the car, start the engine and see if it starts first time.
wait for it to warm up and take it for a test drive, dose it accelerate good? do it slow like it should?
Dose the car die down before it picks back up? dose any smoke come from the engine?
Is the gear box ok? dose it make any nosies when changing gears? Dsoe the car make any nosies?
Do the brakes work ok? do they make a nosie when breaking?
Are the tryes in good condition ? are the tryes unevenly worn at differnt sides?
Is the exhaust in good condition? can you hear any nosie commign from the exhaust?
Is the tempreture gauge high afetr you have taken it for a drive?

Dose the oil filter look like its had cob webs for years ? take the dip stick out and check the oil, is the oild black? Undo the oild cap and look to see if there is any white on the cap indicating water?
Look inside and see if there is loads of gunk where you put the oil in?
Look at the condition of the engine? dose the engine have lots of oil on it? Dsoe the gear box have leaks?
Is there any rust amuwhere? Lots of things you should check before buying a car.

Lots of things i have forgotton but you get the genral idea, always best to get someone to have a look at the car befroe buying it.
Once its bought some people will say bought as seen and you hard job to get your money back.
The batery on the car could be old and wont hold its charge in winter, or the altinator coudl be naffed, just turn the lights on and rev the engine and if the lights get brighte then the altinator is ok.

take a machanic from a garage or have an inspection done becosue its not their money their spending its yours
Worked for Fiat Alfa Romeo Citreon Ford and all have said have an inspection done before you buy a car.

Think what Martin would do? Would he have a quick look round a car? or would he have an inspection done first? :money:

I'll agree with Vansboy on that, it was threepints who decided it was rude when in reality there was nothing rude in the post, just some helpful suggestions.

Text is un-emotive and should always be read in the best light possible.

Point taken. Although I do believe that capitalisation in posts is construed as shouting.

Thanks for the replies guys and wig its a Hyundai Coupe F2 Evolution, 61,000, 1999.
  • Hi Threepints - please let me know if you have decided to have an inspection and who by as I am also looking to have one done. Unfortunately I made the mistake of buying a car first and now need an inspection as back up in court against the seller! Hopefully costs will be paid by him but I'll have to pay for the inspection initially.
  • At the moment I'm looking to use https://www.dekra.com

Although I'll be getting a quote from Green Flag on monday. There vehicle inspection department is only open mon-fri office hours thus they couldn't quote me over the weekend.
