US gambling wins subject to tax even for Brits!

On a trip to Las Vegas had 390 dollars tax (US) deducted from a 1300 dollar win (30%). Was given US IRS form 1042-S.
Apparantly any wins of 1200 dollars or more have this tax deducted by the casino automatically.
As I am a UK taxpayer, am I able to reclaim this money from The US government? Any help would be good - thanks.

maybe it would have been easier only to win $1000...

i think there is a way you can get the money back, but you have to claim for it before you leave the country... something like that... last time i was in vegas there were posters around the place that explained that, maybe at the airport...

Dont know if the laws are different in Canada, but had a win of 2500 canadian dollars paid out in cash with no deduction at Niagra falls casino.
Brought it back to uk and had to convert bit by bit as there is a limit due to money laundering.

No - The tax is payable at the point of the gain - same as working if you were employed here in the US then you'd pay income taxes etc for where you are.

However you do not have to declare cash ynder £5,000.00 (I think) to UK for tax purposes, so you'll only pay one tax!

Gambling winnings are tax free in the UK so don't need to be reported at all for tax purposes.
