For all those that are still asking for info - read through the rest of the tread first!

I joined SL a while ago and got a few lindens, it does take a lot of time and talking to people in there to learn what to do etc... but I sort of got myself stuck and didn't know where to go or what to do!! Then i got a new laptop (Vista) and it didn't work any more

I've just joined up... finding it hard to find a "job" on there though because I am only a day old.

Depends on what kind of job you are looking for.

Dancing / Escorting - Try searching for freelance dancer / escort and teleport to those places.

Land owners / Landlords - Will take a long time to achieve this and need to carefully understand the buying process before diving in.

Camping - Some places allow you to 'camp' and earn Lindens while doing nothing. Not a great earner. Search for Camping.

Money Tree - Yes a real (virtual) money tree - Again poor earner, but will get you some Lindens. Search for Money Tree.

I found that just by talking to people will help, don't be scared, just ask questions, and never be rude.

I started out, and someone bought me Hair, Skin, Shape, Clothes without I having one Linden to my name. Another gave me Lindens to get a Profile Pic done for an job application.

Decide what you want to do and then search for it. I'm sure there are other opportunities. It takes time, don't expect it to happen overnight. I'm just over a month old, but learning new stuff everyday.
