I work for BG and am not ashamed to admit it, I'm proud of my job ( work in gas billing not services unfortunately) and do it because I like helping people not because I earn a large salary. I don't unfortunately and I live in a council house before anybody asks!!!! However I agree with the OP and think she should contact BG to complain because the company does have a policy which says that salespeople should not target elderly or vulnerable people. If I'm ever processing a sale for someone who is elderly I always make sure that they understand that they are entering into a contract and that they have a cooling off period after agreeing to the sale so it does sound as if the OP has cause to complain on this occasion if she thinks that her aunt has been coerced by the salesperson into having something she does not necessarily need!!!! I'd give services a call and ask to speak to a manager to see what they say!!!!

Excellent post, loobylou2. And thanks for the constructive advice.

You must forgive me that I do not possess your level of intellect or understanding.
And my inability to simply accept others opinions and views at face value.
And my deplorable lack of venom when attcking BG or other large utilities.

I can't speak for DirectDebacle, of course, but I for one am happy to excuse you of all these shortcomings. I appreciate your honesty as well. ;)

  • Thank you for clarifying B.G. policy on the elderly and vulnerable. Also good of you to come on here and declare yourself. Well done. Wish there were more like you.

You're very welcome. BG get an atrocious press but we're not all uncaring, heartless monsters you know!!! I'm proud of my job and like to think that I help people whilst I'm doing it as I suspect most of my colleagues do too.. Times are tough for everybody at the moment BG employees included but we do seem to get a lot of flak from people who seem to see us as public enemy number 1 sadly!!!!!

  • Just remembered!!!! Can I also suggest that if the OP speaks to a manager and dosen't get any joy she needs to say that she will contact BG's Customer Relations department and also that she wants to trigger the OFGEM complaints procedure that BG have because this should get things moving for her!!!!

  • I see that now the steam is running out of this thread the OP has started another one...

Slightly different angle. Only the quote stage now, so no money has changed hands.

Seems, despite the insults directed towards me by some posters in this thread, my questioning intellect is in pretty good shape. And I fully understand the Posts I read. ;)

Think I'll start my own thread. How about "British Gas Ate My Hamster!" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

  • IF this thread is for real...... why did the BG Engineer get the salesman to call if the boiler did not need replacing? OP Said the engineer told the salesman to call on her. Surely the BG Engineer should have just said that it needed xx doing to it to make it safe.

If he did not do this then surely this makes them no better than those 'Rogue Trader' types who tell your nan that her roof needs doing and then charges her 3k for fitting a few new tiles while p*ssing in your flower beds?

ETA: Where we live now it was the home of an 80 year old lady who had Alzheimers (sp?) and almost every day there is a call for her from people trying to flog her stuff. It makes me so cross and I really do feel sad to think what they might have done. Also that Southern Electric called the other day offering us a 'rebate' while in reality they were going to switch us - they never used the word swicth, just told us they would 'read our meter to find out what rebate was owed'. I wonder how many people got a shock when their new supplier details arrived on their mat after 'applying for their rebate'. They called on the old lady here as they had her name, not ours.

While I can understand that not ALL old people are senile maybe we should offer them some protection from people like the Southern Electric guy - as someone said, it is swings and roundabouts like with the bank accounts - but what other option is there?

She has already had it replaced - at the cost I show here - I'm trying to see if this was a fair quote as it seemed very expensive to me

Seems like you're not exactly covering yourself in glory on here at the moment. :D
