Ryanair - Hand Baggage Bristol Airport

We are going on our first Ryanair flight next month, Bristol to Marrakech. We need some information on how strict ryanair are on hand luggage size, they clearly give the instructions that you are only allowed one bag and its dimensions and weight.
I just need to know how and when they measure the hand luggage, and what happens if the bag is slighter longer than permitted, say by a few centimetres.

My experience is that they don't actually weigh or measure your bags so if you are close to the limit it will not be noticed. This relies on on-line check-in, as you don't go to the check-in desk at all.
I suppose you can't legislate for an over-zealous jobsworth though. We ensure our bags are not over 10kg, although they are sometimes slightly 'fatter' than permitted as the bag expands.0 -
Most Airports are OK. Stansted seems to be the worst. A number of occasions I've been there this year, they've had a bloke at Departures checking hand baggage sizes. If it dosen't fit they mark your boarding card and make you check-in the bag.0

1. Remember Rules should not be broken.
2. Rules that are broken have conciquences.
3. Conciquences usually result in loosing money.
Ryan air make very clear, in all fare ness the allowance you are aloud.
Let it be know, RyanAir at Bristol will pop you bag in one of those measuring guages before you walk through the gate to the plane, reason probberly because so many people check in online now and it would be pointless doing it before!
Should you not beable to fit it in - naturally once you have taken out your coat and of course the second pair of jeans you naturally wanted to wear on the plane as well... You have to go back and check it in, pay for the privalige of using a checkin desk and pay for the privaliage for yourbag to be put in the hold. But hold on,youhave your bad taken off you before you were just walking to the plane!!!! By the time you get to the checkin desk the plane has gone!!! Alas no bags to off load cause you didnt check um in!
Nowyou pay for checking in, the bag to go in the hold, the missed plane fee the extra ticket cost. LOL Just do the right thing and dont break the rules. Save some money by spending some money! or just dont take a bag! Vistit the website and educate yourself!
It happens and it happens more!0 -
I must admit I have seen them checked at a few airports and people refused for being over size and it appears quite random. Ask yourself if you want to take the gamble with the possible consequences as described by MRiFLY above.
If you're borderline or unsure then get to the airport early and try it in one of the bag checkers then verify the weight at an unused check-in desk. You then have an opportunity to re-pack, shuffle things around (there seems to be more than one of you travelling), take a gamble or pay extra if required.0 -
The main people at Stansted that stop you are the guys/girls just before you go through security. They dont care who you are flying with if your bag doesn't fit in the guage its back to checkin or leave it behind depending on if the checkin is still open. I saw a woman deliberately keep her laptop out of sight at checkin to conform to the one piece of hand luggage rule only to be stopped at security. The guy said you have 3 options, check you handbag in, check you laptop in or leave one behind.mystic_trev wrote: »Most Airports are OK. Stansted seems to be the worst. Earlier this year I was at check in and the person in front of me was having a huge argument with the staff as they had been sent back to check in their hand luggage and were throwing a hissy fit that they couldn't carry in on board plus they had to pay both for the bag and for a new check in (they had previously checked in online apparently).
I don't know when they were stopped but they were so cross it was almost funny. At one point they even threw the bag (a canvas ruck sac) across the check in hall and threatened to leave it there as the costs of checking it in outweighed the value of the stuff in it. Lots of cries of 'we'll never use this airline again' and the rest of the queue rather hoping they meant it!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. In reality you can probably get away with the BA Hand baggage restrictions 56x45x25 Ryanair are 55x40x20
If your a nervous flyer perhaps you'd prefer this option for your hand baggage!

Always worth being within the limits if you can. If the bag is soft and you can squeeze it through the size checking thingy you'll be OK. If not you'll be asked to check-in - I've seen this happen to someone I was travelling with their "cabin size" suitcase was a cm or two too big and they had to check-in.
Word of warning budget airlines can be very strict with their rules, far more than normal airlines - they can bring a new meaning to the word jobsworth.
Will they check, as someone who travels far too often and travels light I've seen that there is no knowing whether they'll check or not - I've had the same airline: not check hand baggage at all, check for size, check the weight (all for the same bag). I've even seen "enforcers" at the gate..."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -
We will be checking in at Bristol airport as we already have a suitcase and we have paid for the baggage and check-in.
My worry is the cabin case I have is 57x39x19 (including the handle at the top of the case), the case only cost me £6.99 (dimensions given on the label were 51x34.5x19, they haven't included the wheels, handles on the label
).
If I have to check this in it will cost around £120 (10kg x £12). As the case has a side handle and a handle at the top, I think it will be better if I get my saw out now and just take the handle at the top off !!! :rotfl:0 -

My guess is you'll be alright with this: the width and depth are OK so it will go into the size guage, the handle will just stick out the top by 2cm. As others have said on here sometimes they check the size of handluggage and sometimes they don't. But I think you could count yourself very unlucky if you don't manage to get this bag onboard.0
