I have just set up a 360 60GB console yesterday and all seems to be working ok apart from when I put in the Pure game disc and the Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 disc the 360 said i need an update to play the games!!
I cant believe that I cant just use a game disc as is, ive owned a number of consoles and this is the first time ever that I couldnt just play the disc.
Am I missing something or do Microsoft and the game developers expect everyone to be able to connect to the internet with the 360, what happens if you dont have the equipment to do this, are you left with two shiny useless discs costing £70?
I am fortunate that I do have two laptops and a couple of routers, bt voyager 210 and NetgearDG834G and some ethernet cables, but surely this is taking the p*** what happened to just having something that worked offline?
any way apart from a rant the question is, is it easy to set up a direct connection using either of these routers to the 360 and is the ISP provider( Eclipse Internet ) needed to provide settings Etc?

as far as i remember with my 360 i just connected it via ethernet cable to my sky broadband router and once i sorted out my xbox live profile i was ready to go.
As far as im aware it was that simple for everyone i know and you can get updates with the silver (free) subscription too.
Regarding having to update brand new games, i agree its a pain and they should ship the game in a finished condition but with pro evo 2009 it is definitely worth it as it updates the squad lists to include the most current transfers and it adds a few new teams and licenses to the game though why they couldnt do this before you buy it (considering the game came out in october and the season was well under way by then) is beyond me0 -
Well, if you didn't have the xbox connected to the internet then it wouldn't know if there was an update available for the game, therefore you wouldn't get promoted :rolleyes:0

Games have updates as errors are found after the game was released so the update patches the errors,0

For the love of god...
Do you know what? I preferred it when computers et al were the preserve of those capable of thinking for themselves.
Anyhoo, rant over...
If it wasn't connected to the internet, how would it know there was an update? It wouldn't unless by clairvoyance so the game would play straight away. AS IT WAS CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET it found the update. I can't fathom for the life of me why it is a problem to wait a little while whilst it downloads it. After all, it's there to fix issues that have been found so it's for YOUR benefit.0 -

No you idiot it was not connected to the internet it never has been it has just flashed up on the tv screen that the game cannot be played without an update
you must be lovely to work with persistently smug and arrogant
if you had read the post with any sense you would have seen I was asking if it was easy to set up a direct connection, why would i ask this if I was aalready connected smartboy
try engaging your brain next time0 -
If there's an update on the game disc then you just have to accept it and let it do it automatically, possibly rebooting in the process.0

Aye, if there is a firmware update requirement, chances are its on the disk, and therefore pretty important.Super geek.0

when i bought unreal tournament 3 and put the disc in it said i couldnt play it without updating via xbox live. the console wasnt connected to the net at the time. there was no warning on the games box that an internet connection was needed to be able to play the game. an internet connection meaning the ability to update the console.0
