sorry if the post sounded harsh, but from your OP you came across as a scrounger who was now shocked at having to shell out your own cash and could no longer afford your cider and ciggies ;)

    This doesn't add up.

OP says she now has topay £350 a month for rent and council tax. Lowest council tax is arouns £12 a week = £50 a month. That makes rent £300 a month or £70 a week.

Son earns £185 net, guess that's about £220 gross. OP earns £70 a week.

Non-dependant deduction for up to £222.99 is £23.35 weekly.

OP's HB assesment works as follows:
    Allowed income £60.50 + £5 earnings disregard = £65.50
    Actual income £70.00
    Excess Income £4.50.
    65% of excess income = £2.93

    Weekly Rent £70.00 - £23.35 - £2.93 = £43.72 weekly Housing Benefit.

    Unless there's something missing?
  • Yeah, non dependant deductions for this year are as follows.
Aged 18 or over and in remunerative work
    • gross income less than £116 = £7.40
    • gross income £116 - 171.99 = £17.00
    • gross income £172 - £222.99 = £23.35
    • gross income £223 - £295.99 = £38.20
    • gross income £296 - £368.99 = £43.50
    • gross income greater than £369 = £47.75
    • Aged 25 or over and on Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance, or aged 18 or over and not in remunerative work = £7.40
    • In receipt of Pension Credit = Nil
OP your figures don't stack up. You will lose some help, yeah, that's because your boy is now expected to chip in to the household (and way more than just dig money). But the amounts you're quoting seem well out. Something's not right here.

Just been looking at the figures and it seems I'm having to pay more for the next 3 months because arrears have accumulated while this has been getting sorted out.

Sons gross is just over 222.99 so non dependent reduction = 38-20
HB payment = 80 per month.
I'm a little unsure on how they are working out the council tax, at the moment I have a bill for 50 pound for the next 2 months.

Maybe after these 3 months things wont look so bad.
  • Still doesn't make any sense for a single person with no dependants to be only working part time and I think it about time the benefit system stopped subsidising people in this situation!

This is more of a rant than anything.
Until recently I was receiving housing benefit and council tax benefit, because i work part time earning 70 pound a week. I paid roughly 20 pound a month for each of them out of my own money.
My son was 18 at the beginning of November, and is working full time. Because of this my benefits have almost stopped, I now have to find 350 pound a month to cover rent and tax. Because of this I now have to ask my son for 80 pound a week to cover these out goings, before he paid 40 for his board and lodgings. So I'm having to double what he was paying and I'm not receiving any of it to run the house. So now I have even less to live on for the week. It seems so unfair that because of my situation he has to dig deeper into his pockets.
I know they calculate it on the total amount of money that comes into the house, and you're probably going to say make him pay 120 a week, but that's a lot out of his wages each week. We have already had arguments over it, and I know if I was in his shoes I would feel exactly the same. If I was working full time, this wouldn't be an issue, and he would still be paying his 40 pound. But as the situation stands, that's not possible.

And the problem is? If he was living in a flat on his own, it'd cost him a damned sight more than £120 a week I can tell you. Maybe you should point this out to him next time he goes off on one and tell him that if he thinks he can do better, perhaps he should go put his money where his mouth is.

He's just found out what the real world is like.

I would agree that as he's 18, there's only one of him and he's got no oddities, that it could be considered that the OP had 18 years to plan for this moment!

Is there any reason why you haven't been able to find, or do, full time work if your son is now 18?

It looks like that is the only fair option, especially as your son is working full time.

Whats the point in having this section if all everyone is going to say is 'get a job' I thought the idea was for people to get help here, no one is going to ask for help if that's all they can expect.
And for the record, I am not a scrounger, if I could work full time tomorrow I would, but life's not always that simple. I do enjoy working for the company I'm with, but there's no full time work available there, so now I have to keep looking for alternative work, it may be next week, it may be 6 months down the line, but hopefully something will turn up. It's not an ideal situation and no one knows my personal background, but that's the way things are at the moment.

You see you have been given help the best advice is to get a full time job  the company you work for have no full time positions available at the moment then perhaps get another part time job. People cannot help if there is no benefits available to you.
