Refurbished Fujitsu from PC World & motherboard problems

Hi,
I purchased a refurb'd laptop from PC World around 4mths ago - cost me £299.
After receiving a virus my laptop was kaput so I put it into a pc repair shop thinking it would be easily fixed - was told today it would cost me £280 as I need a new motherboard?
Does anyone know if this is because of the virus?
Can I expect PC World to repair this under the 1yr mfg warranty?
What's the best way to ensure I can get this fixed under the warranty (ie) do I deny all knowledge of a virus. I simply can't afford to fork out £300 on another laptop or a repair :(
Tx..

Somebody is fleecing you hard there.

It will be under warranty and any decent repair shop would have told you to take it back to PC world.

Secondly, a motherboard could be as little as £30-£40, plus maybe a couple of hours to fit. Doing the maths there the guy could be taking you for at least £150.

    Whats the current symptoms?
  • a virus would not cause motherboard failure. the lappy should be returned to pcworld for repair under warranty, wherever pgilc1 gets laptop motherboards for £30 from I want to know!
generally, I'm not a fan of pcworld, but in this case they look a better option than the indie, which is sad :(

  • Thanks for both responses.. so should I simply call PC World tomorrow and plead ignorance (being blonde, won't be difficult) and ask that they take a look at it and repair etc?
The symptoms are basically that it won't start up. I inadvertently opened a virus (fake facebook email) and it shutdown on me before I could run AV..refused to reboot after that so I took it straight to a repair shop after my friend confirmed that her pc had sent a virus to her full address book.
  • do you have a restore disk, which may have come with the pc? what is the make and model?

  • Hi,
I think it's an Amillo? Not sure of the other dets...not sure if any restore disk came with it either.
I have thousands of pics of my children - are these retrievable?? :(
  • Nothing - it just whirrs away with a black screen
  • can't you get Jack to take it into CTU and get Chloe to look at it?
