Sleeping Bag, looking for QUALITY

Options
I would like to find and buy a QUALITY sleeping bag, not necessarily for as little money as possible but obviously I don't want to pay any more than I have to. I would like to find somethings that is seriously weather proof, very warm and is a tough hard wearing sleeping bag which won't damage easily.

What are the QUALITY names in sleeping bags, and other than the expensive high street outdoors/camping shops where can I find a QUALITY sleeping bag such as I've described above?

Thanks

I bought the cheapest 4 season bag I could from cotswold outdoor. It was something like £65 back in 1996. Snugpack I think. Anyway, I assure you that 4 season bags are worth it - I've never been cold in it.

Rab sleeping bags are extremely high quality bags, quality fillings of down, pack extremely small and are light. Very, very cosy. I have an Angjulak one which is just for summer use and was £75 which I bought back in 97/98. Rab is top quality though, the Rolls Royce of sleeping bags I'd say. You'd be best to get a sleeping bag liner too for it. silk or pertex. Keep the sleeping bag stored out of the pac bag when you're not using it for long periods of time to keep the loft in it.

You'd also need a bivoac bag (bivvy bag) to enclose the sleeping bag in, so you can keep it dry. You could just buy a large thick plastic bag just for this which costs a couple of quid or you can buy a specially made bivvy bag made from tough wearing material which will protect your sleeping bag from the elements, depending on where you are going to be using the bag etc. Are you going on an expedition or something? ;)

  • You could always try an army surplus store if theres one in your area and you don't mind secondhand. My mate bought one and while it was a bit smelly it was certainly far warmer than my high street rubbish.

  • I would also say rab ive had a jacket that is made of the down that goes into their bags and the coat is very warm.

As has already been said down is the best because its light and warm, but useless if you get it wet. For most people synthetic bags are fine/cheaper. Most sleeping bags are made from nylon which is strong but delicate and is not waterproof, splashproof at best.
Good names are RAB(down), Mountain Equipment, Snugpak, North Face.

  • OH likes the army surplus type for using on his boat. Says they are warm and waterproof. You can pick them up on eBay really cheap.
  • Thanks everyone so far, I'm looking for a new sleeping bag because my present one is old now and can no longer do the job properly which it was made for because it's worn out, and as I don't know the names of modern sleeping bags which are quality makes I'm in need of the advice which you've all given so far.

Thank you all and happy new year.

You don't say what temperature you want it to go down to, or if weight is a consideration.

  • I did this exercise about 4 years ago when I was going to Namibia (was warned that camping in the desert can be VERY COLD - this was correct!!!) IIRC I ended up with an Angjulak (4 season) guaranteed to 0 degrees. I think I got the best price by following links from Ebay (of course, I wanted a new one!)

Just for info, what seemed to make the most difference was having a really good hood on the bag to keep my head warm. I didn't think I'd be using this, but when the temperature dropped it made all the difference!!!!
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • As light as possible for a -10 degrees temperature bag
