I would have expected exactly zero errors relating to the CD drive!

If you are happy opening up the case, remove the power supply plug from the back of the CD-ROM (it's the smaller one, about half-an-inch wide), and see whether things now work without a powered-up CD-ROM drive.

If all now works without random shutdowns, you are closer to the problem...

PS Alternatively, press both plugs (power-supply and data) at the back of the CD-ROM drive hard towards the drive. Do the same with all the plugs on each of the cables. See what happens then!

PPS Be careful to shut down Windows, and power down the system unit by removing the mains plug from the back, and earth yourself to the metal case before ferreting inside the case!!
  • I have an emachine 210, which has suddenly developed an annoying habit of shutting down without any warning whatosever! When this occurs, the screen goes dead and in fact thinks the machine has been switched off, the keyboard is out of action, but the hard drive indication light remains on.
Looking in the device manager window, there is no indication of a problem.
The graphics are built in, but I have recently installed an ATI Radeon 9250 board.

Anybody got any experience of this or any ideas how to fix or diagnose the problem please?
emachines comes with a couple of restore discs that will put your computer back to the settings on the day you bought it, they should correct the problem, save all personal data first as everything is lost in the restore.
