British Gas type CO Alarms-info
Have a look here;
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dooper786/test/coalarm.pdf
This is the standard type of CO alarm which is widely sold by British Gas and also available from other outlets.
The unit is guaranteed to last for a number of years.
When it is installed or sold to you (often by a BG engineer) he is supposed to write the install date on the back.
Now the important bit.
When the detector is reaching its end of life, it will give either 1,2 or 3 short beeps every minute.
There is a considerable difference between the FULL ALARM noise and the end of life indicator noise.
If your detector makes 1,2 or 3 short beeps every minute, It is NOT indicating a full alarm therefore a hazard HAS NOT been detected. In this case all you need do is
(a) buy a new one if its out of warranty
or
(b) If its in warranty get it replaced via that route.
If howver you have a FULL ALARM situation, you can shut off your gas supply at the meter and contact the national Gas Emergency service. They will then attend,cut your gas off and issue you with a warning notice. You can then get your appliances checked for safe and correct operation by a CORGI reg'd engineer who you will have to pay unless you have a contract of some kind.
