  • In my late teens & early twenties i used to go out regularly, maybe several times a week. I never got in a fight, i never drank until i fell over, i never caused any trouble or affected anyone elses enjoyment or wellfare. When i'd had enough to drink, i stopped and went home, and the same goes for the friends i was out with.

The secret to managing this? I'm not an idiot and i was brought up properly, knowing right from wrong and the basic concept of respect.

Thats the problem with todays society. Booze or no booze, these people will find some way to cause damage and upset to people and their possesions.

I don't go out much these days because i can't afford it (and i'm only 27), favouring a drink in the home. And now it seems i might not be able to afford that?!

Here's the thing- If beer was half the price, would i drink twice as much? No, i'd drink the same amount and spend half as much.

'Cheap booze' isnt the problem, its the fool at the end of the bottle / pint.

Stopping cheap offers will just hit people harder in the pocket. In the long run, people will stop going out as it will be expensive & in turn we will see more pubs / clubs closing.

With the downturn in people coming through the door, profits will be hit & with the non-flexible charges like rent, electric, heating, staff costs will see either..

    a) An increase in entry prices
    b) An increase in price of softdrinks (coke, lemonade)
    c) Reduction of staff levels / wages

Pub / Club owners wont be able to push the prices of fosters, carling, carlsberg, vodka & coke etc up as these are the offers that get people into the pubs. Advertising them at £1.80 a pint, gets people in. Advertising them at £3 a pint will just get people moving onto the next wetherspoons, lloyds, £1 bar etc..

Put the price of booze up because some people drink too much?
Do we realy pay these people to come up with this tosh?
Who ever came up with this idea should be found and sent back to the mail room before somebody takes them seriously.

A better idea would be to put the IQ of our law makers up.

  • I don't mind cheap booze in the supermarkets for people who are going to drink at home.

What I do mind is the pubs selling cheap booze and therefore encouraging people to drink too much.

If they want to rot then their livers their choice but as a significant amount of violence and anti social behaviour on our streets is linked to alcohol I do mind that. I want to be able to go out at night and feel safe.

However I also mind drink companies selling booze that tastes like lemonade or orangade etc. Alot of the alcopops don't taste like alcohol so no wonder people are drinking too many.

Although I also agree that education is a key point here.

Is britain becoming (or wanting to become) a nation of iresponsible citizens?

Looks to me like the booze issue is becoming like the credit issue. Why cannot we all be responsible for our own actions? I think we all should start looking within and be more responsible. If I were to borrow like mad I should be thinking how I will pay it all back.

Same way if booze is cheap why should I binge on it? Why should responsible citizens lose out on £10 a litre bottles of smirnoff or baileys just coz a few irrsponsible citizens (unfortunately under aged ones) binge on the 30p cider or beer.

Should we not be looking at why our country has reached this state!! Obviously it is becoz the state has meddled too much with family matters. Kids cannot be spanked, I would have been a vagrant if not for the few spanks during my childhood which kept me from going overboard.

Why have family values gone down the drain?? Hope this recession jolts the country to be more pro acive.

The answer to the issue is not of banning cheap booze but focusing on moral values within society.

  • At the end of the day, those who misuse alcohol will do so no matter what price it is in the supermarket or off licence. If anything it's more likely to make people steal it if the price goes up, whether that be from their parents house, shop etc.

It's not the price that needs to be changed, it's how strict the law on people who sell to minors, give to minors, buy for minors etc should be. GET TOUGH...not more expensive!

Just to add and also what punishment the minors themselves get.... aslap on the wrist is not gonna stop 'em. if they know they are also going down then they will think twice rather than just catch the guys who supplythem..

no doubt the guys who supply them should get a much tougher sentence, let them both go down and this will reduce if not stop.

Yes, contrariwise I was not spanked: now I rob off-licences and mug old ladies because of the psychological disturbance of not being hit. Oh, when will the government understand the key to moral integrity?
