I'd certainly make a note of who you speak to at BG and when you call, if possible ask them to put it in writing that they dont supply you, they probably wont do that but its worth a try because if you get a letter denying they supply you then in a years time you get a massive bill from them, then that would work in your favour.
I would suggest putting some money aside as Cardew says, base it on BG standard tariff rates. Take meter readings regularly to work out your usage and cost.
You need to know if its cubic meters or cubic feet your meter measures in then you can work out the KwH by multiplying the amount of units by 11.13 if its cubic meters or 31.5 if its cubic feet.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!

According to the OP, National Grid have no record hence why I suggested the IGTsNational gird is the first port of call and the will be able to advise you if the data base that covers your property is held by and igt, which one it is along with the appropiate contact number to find out your supplier. It is best to check with them first as in some instances (more than you would think) neighbouring properties could be under different IGT'S

If its an IGT then if you do rack up a massive bill you dont have to worry about having a pre-payment meter inflicted on you. PPMs cant be put on IGT supplies so I'm told.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!

Maybe your system is inferior to mine?
Ditto, (Love Xoserv, and Ecoes ^_^) We can definitely search by MSN (Meter serial number)
*thinks* Actually i did today for a colleague on a call. The problem was that the Xoserv address was slightly different to what we'd been searchng for, giving us no results. (Postcode was one letter wrong) MSn searches don't guaruntee a result but it might find something.
Also, i'd recommend searching for your house using the roayl mail postcode finder. http://postcode.royalmail.com/portal/rm/postcodefinder;jsessionid=KHR0JOSRRL1PYFB2IGJETIQ?catId=400145&gear=postcode
Enter your property detials, it'll find your royal mail issued postcode, sometimes this can differ from what you've been told and may turn up incorrect results.0 -

No, they can't. What they *can* do is terminate supply instead. I've said it before, and i'll say it now (sorry, minor thread hijack) if you fall in to problems paying your bill, let the company know! It's not in their best interest to cut you off, if they can secure the debt even by spreading it out, they're far happier. Plus they may let you spread it out.

OP,
Even the experts from the Utility companies are not sure of the best way to find out who is supplying your gas.
It really isn't your probem, especially as your interface with the various companies - and it could be any of them - will not be with someone who is willing to do the leg work to find out if it is their company.
As stated in posts #2 and #12 just put by some money in an account and let your supply company find you!!
Whatever happens you will be in pocket.0 -

if you call the m number line at national grid they/we cannot search by serial number like it or not that is fact and certainly not Tosh. Gas suppliers, can search access and search via that but the MNUMBER enquires cannot for many reasons agreed with OFGEM which is why I suggested the op contact the gas supplier with it instead - which does illustrate that I actually know what I am talking about rather that suggesting another companies system is inferrior when I do not know their systems nor the applicable ofgem guidelines rules etc.
Either way no matter what you wish to believe if the supplier has failed to register on either National Grids data base or the appropiate igt data base as required or another reason if the details are not held the correct advice is for the op to contact a supplier of choice and advise them that the data base holds no records then request that they arrange for a new mprn number be generated so they can register an account with them,
I would point out that this advice is agreed upon with ofgem who lay down the rules and regs for the database and how it is run/managed.and ng are very strict about this.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0
