I just think he was typical of a man who had worked away from home for many years.

She was in the driving seat as far as finance was concerned, because she'd had to be there over the years-hence the envelopes!

Wasn't their food bill well over £100, I'm sure they could cut back there. But really was it necessary, as I'm sure they probably have investments tied up somewhere, and just wanted to release some spare cash without dipping into anything to have a new kitchen. The money for the bathroom came from????

They seemed to be a hard working couple, 3 jobs between two? I'm sure in the future she'll now save a fortune after this makeover and be able to do up other rooms or buy more fine art.

I wish Martin wouldn't keep banging on about the benefits of the Nationwide credit card for spending overseas without mentioning the pitfalls. The fact is, the Dynamic Currency Conversion scam is rife throughout certain countries, such as Spain, which makes this card useless. As major hotel groups and big stores like El Corte Ingles are in on the scam, there is no way that Visa and Mastercard would dare to punish them. The EU could do something about it but, as we are just exploitable Brits, it is just ignored.

But the DCC scam is on any c/c, not just Nationwide, so if you are going to use a c/c abroad, it is the best bet

We are sure to get withdrawel syptoms until then :( It's nice to see Martin live, even if it's through a TV screen :) Watching him on TV keeps my heart alive :)
  • This is the only one in the series I have watched and really enjoyed it.
Mrs W reminded me so much of myself! I do all our finances, and do a budget for the month, put cash in envelopes etc..(Although I am more moneysaving because I use those plastic money bags that banks give away free and put little notes in them) A moneysaving tip for you there, Mrs W
My OH can't be bothered to work out our finances although I'm more than happy to hand over the reins, but he likes to make a little dig every now and then on what our money goes on, just like Mr Wadeson did, I think that this is because they like to remind us that we may control the money but it is only because they let us. ;)
I dont think that Mr Wadeson should sell his art for a new kitchen either. If they were in severe financial straits maybe, but not for a kitchen. It would break my heart to sell it if I was him. As for the contact lenses thing, of course he was going to change supplier, but he didnt want to be pushed around on the telly thats all. (Doh)
I thought this was a great programme because as Martin said, this family were quite organized in a way and he had to work hard. Also I noticed that Mrs W mentioned that she had a meal plan so she has obviously had a look at the Old Style board, but she needs to look again if she thinks that £110 per week for food is reasonable.

Just curious... how much is reasonable?

I haven't got a clue what others spend on their week's shop. :)

I want to be very canny this year, went a bit mad at Christmas but the temptation to splurge is gone now. Phew!!! I know I spent too much in the supermarket so now I'm going to have £40 tops a week for the supermarket. That's everything for myself and two young ones, 5 and 6. I know I can do it, just need to use the slow cooker more and be a bit more organised. Did the Budget Planner last night down to the last penny. I'm definitely going to account more for my spending, tried last year and after a month or so, it went by the wayside. Not this time though... I'm really going to put the effort in and see what I can set aside for our holiday time.

  • I think the programme said that there were two adults and two teenage boys in the house, I'd say £80 was more like average, so I'd bet that Mrs Wadeson buys a few luxuries!
But on the other hand, she works two jobs, and they were not really hard up, so if she can afford to spend £110 per week, or £440 per month on average thats up to her. But if she did ever need to raise some cash she could get that food bill down by a large chunk - maybe she needs to join the Grocery challenge and buy a slow cooker!
