Wireless Routers - any to avoid?

Hi.

Just invested in a new PC to find that my modem (Bt Voyager 105) is incompatible with Vista Home Premium and have been advised to get an wireless one.

With AOL, so have rung them and they have offered to supply a Netgear one but a little  so could anyone keep it simple and brief for me?

TIA

Netgear are a generally well-respected brand. If the router suits your needs and is being offered at a reasonable price, I'd go for it.

If AOL have offered you a Netgear, why would you refuse it?

As it means being tied to them for another 12 months.

Wondered whether it was worth going for or investing in something else?

I'd suggest switching ISP full stop - AOHell/Amost On Line are not exactly brilliant!

If you're not into online gaming, and therefore not a fussed about having lightning fast performance, then you don't need to worry overly about the router. Netgear are pretty decent; I have a more obscure brand of router in Zyxel, which has worked fine for me, even for the odd MMORGP. :)

  • Jes,

Thank you - believe it or not, I've had no problems with AOL ( I must be lucky!!!).:rotfl:
  • I would agree with moving ISP's. Router are dirt cheap to buy now, so staying with a company just for a free one isn't really worth.

I use business broadband reseller (ADSL24) and they have a stonnkingly good service. Completely free of throttling etc and for £20 a month I get 330gb usage limit. Can't complain at that.

You can pick up netgear wireless routers secondhand for around £15 (I just sold one for that on AVForums). :)

theres 2 choices, you can stay and buy a router or you can move isp and see they would throw in a free wireless router, its your choice, u able to get cable in your area, if you went with sky i believe you can get a free router from them

If you can't make your mind up the go on dial up.

I would love to agree with you, but currently entanet (adsl24, ukfsn, vivaciti etc supplier) are getting a bit chocked, the promised 2 new centrals are not yet online, and may be a few months, no sign of lighting the extra segments on the current centrals, the ALT struggling, central speeds reported (and seen) of 1.2mbs etc...
if it wasn't for the lack of alternative at my exchange, I'd be off (and I have been singing their praises).
I need 100Gb/month, unthrottled for £20 or less, no LLU except cpw (er..no)

Back to wireless routers, I have a particular loathing for Belkins. Their PCI and USB wifi adapters are find but their routers are horrific.

I am with Conor on this - don't like Belkin routers.

Not keen on the interface and have had problems with two in the past.
