Tesco/Morrisons/Asda (bogof rotation)

Options
This is a habit that I have got into over the past 4 months or so, and it easily saves me £120 per month on my shopping bill.
Basicaly the 'big 3' Supermarkets (Tesco, Asda and Morrisons) all have bogofs (buy one get one free) on a range of goods at any one time. In my experience Morrisons is the best, then Tescos followed by Asda (remember I'm talking about best for bogofs, NOT overall cost of an average weekly shop). For my weekly shop I will visit 2 of the 3 supermarkets, (I rotate them over time). The first one I go to I ONLY BUY THE BOGOF OFFERS, even if they may not be exactly what I need right now or my usual type of brand/item. I then proceede to the second Supermarket, and again concentrate on all their BOGOFS, but also the usual things I need to complete my shopping. You will soon find yourself building up a stock of extra supplies at home (unless your appetite/usage increases dramaticaly!). After a few weeks of rotation, the different offers that the big 3 have on will mean you will have a good stock/range of goods stocked up at home and will be spending less on that weekly shop. I have cut my 4 weekly shopping bill from £600 to £480, and have continued to do so for the last 4 months or so.

Pros - Saves money.
Forces you to try different BOGOF products

Cons - Takes longer to do the weekly shop.
Forces you to try different BOGOF products

I don't know if this has been covered before, apologies if it has.

I believe Asda will match other supermarkets' offers including BOGOF. Have you ever tried taking a Morrisons leaflet to Asda?
  • No I haven't. Assuming all Morrisons offers were in their leaflet and I went to Asda with it, how would I use it? At the checkout when its time to pay (I would have a large number of items that were bogofs), or at cusomer services when I arrive?
I must admit don't like the thought of holding a queue up while my Morrisons leaflet is checked and deductions made for numerous items every time I go to Asda!.

I don't know (I don't actually do the shopping in my house ), but I have seen it on posters and I've read about it on here. I know they have mostly stopped accepting other supermarkets' vouchers now, but I haven't heard that they've stopped price-matching...
  • Just show the leaflet to the checkout operator who will reduce the prices of those items to match bogoff.
  • will this work in any supermarket??

I think BOGOFs are a bit of a problem - I generally only buy them if (a) I actually need 2 of them (whatever they are) or (b) they are relatively long-life items that I won't use up any faster by having spare in the house. An example of (b) would be potatoes, toilet rolls, toothpaste, etc. I generally find that BOGOFs for wine or chocolate are not helpful!

I buy a few BOGOFs but the main one that I stock up on is Ribena. OH can drink a 1 litre bottle a week (he doesn't drink tea/coffee) and at about £2.40 ish a bottle I don't think it's cheap. He won't drink any other blackcurrant drink either, I've tried to sneak some alternatives in but he susses me out :p . So, what I did when it was on BOGOF at Tesco's a few week ago was order about 30 bottles and got them to delivery them as I ordered over t'internet. He's stocked up for the next 30 weeks :D

I'm with Asda & we do the Admatch @ the checkouts ... however, it must be in date, can't be an internet ad as far as I know, we only do a maximum of three & only match the offer exactly, eg a woman came in with a Somerfield ad saying in Scotland only, we don't match that obviously! And the admatch can't be used with the discount card, tho you can split the shopping into different transactions & use the discount card without admatch

We buy a lot of BOGOF, as said Morrions is the best for them. I can save about 20% of my shopping on these. If goods have along shelf life I stock up for weeks when the offer is on as they often last 3-4 weeks.

For example Ribena, and Libbys Apple C. I have loads stocked up in the shed (not have enough space in kitchen) and use the old stocks until depleated or until next time they are back in stock. I also do this with biscuits, Blue ribbon, breakaways, Foxs, Toliet rolls etc they always on offer.

We dont have a Asda near us, nearest one is 60 miles away, I find them not cheap at all, in comparisons to Morrisons. Tesco locally dont have a huge range but I have noticed there BOGOF are better than Asda the times I do go there for shopping a couple of times a year.

I am quite lucky that all major (& minor) supermarkets are in a three mile radius (Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury, Somerfield, Kwik Save, Aldi, Lidl).

So I usually spend approx 30 minutes browsing their websites and pick off all the decent BOGOF's and check prices on stuff that I actually need, it saves me a lot of money. Morrisons are the only major supermarket that don't have a decent website that show their full range of offers, even Somerfields is better.

I can't remember the last time I bought multipack crisps or breakfast cereals at full price, there is always at least one supermarket with some on offer.

Don't like Asda much they only started the BOGOF's about 6 months ago to keep up with the others. Occasionally have good deals and the curry pot is very good especially chicken madras.

In my experience they are all out to fool us into 'thinking' we are getting a good deal, you need to be selective. On certain things Sainsbury tend to double the price and then mark it BOGOF especially on fresh meat products. Morrisons like to strategically place BOGOF products next to others that 'look' very similar. Tesco have some very good offers, Somerfield are only good for BOGOF, normal prices seem expensive.

Edit: If I had to rate them currently for BOGOF's or half price deals I put Sainsburys first, then Morrisons, Tesco, Asda and Somerfield.
