Barclaycard perfomring credit checks.

I recently moved banks and obviously had to update direct debit details - this was not a problem anywhere but Barclaycard who failed to take the money from my new account (even though the instruction was visible on the online bank interface) so they have charged me for a missed payment and over limit fee etc etc.

Not only this but I received a letter saying that they searched my credit report and as a result reduced my credit limit. Are they allowed to search your report like this without your consent? I thought they could only do that if you were applying for a card/loan/mortgage with them? Will that search show up on my credit report?

Cant believe it - I wish they had just run me....imbeciles.

presumably you have complained politely about their mistake and had the charges refunded?

presumably you have read your credit agreement and checked whether you have authorised them to do a credit search

in any event why is a single credit check so important?

Yes, you gave them consent for both the initial search and ongoing searches (as required to help them manage your account) when you signed the credit agreement.
Will that search show up on my credit report?
Possibly, although it may only be an 'unrecorded enquiry', meaning other lenders won't see it.

At the end of the day you didn't pay your bill (for whatever reason) so they had a look to see if you were in 'trouble'. They didn't like what they saw on your report and lowered your limit accordingly.
  • There was a post that explained this somewhere on here. There are two sorts of credit checks, hard and soft? Hard searches are when you apply for things and they do an indepth credit check. Soft searches are more like an account maintainence sort of thing and if they have found something adverse on there, that could be why they have reduced your limit.
The soft searches do not count towards your 'score'. HTH
