Chicago O'Hare T5-T1 transfer

Flying into O'Hare terminal 5 (Virgin) on Wednesday then out of terminal 1 (United) a couple of hours later. I haven't been through O'Hare for 15 years so I suspect that it has change a little since I was last there. How far apart are the two terminals?

I'm a little peeved that Priority Pass don't have a contracted lounge in terminal 1. Luckily they do in terminal 5 (Swiss) so I'll get to use the lounge on the way home next week, especially as I have a longer connect time and therefore time to enjoy the lounge.

  • I went through O'Hare last year and there is a mono-rail between the terminals. The airports website tells you how long it takes between terminals. Because we'd gone from an international flight arrving in one terminal to a domestic one in another terminal we had to go through security again which took forever, so allow plenty of time of this. For one of the worlds larger hubs I found it very disorganised with unhelpful staff. All airport managers should go Changi in Singapore to see how it should be donne.

We did the ORD T5>>>>T1 xfer in June and, as cheesy.mike said, you use the monorail - it takes 7 or 8 minutes from memory. We made it from plane, through immigration and customs to RCC in T1 in less than an hour, including a T5 Mcdonalds refuelling stop for the kids. We were lucky - we forgot to find the priority line at T1 security but it still only took us 5 minutes to get airside.

I did the flight yesterday and the transfer was quick and easy. O'Hare is a much nicer airport than I remember it with a good selection of shops & restaurants to keep me interested and fast/easy progress through security. I look forward to going back next week to check out the lounges - I'll check the Swiss Lounge (via Priority Pass) then I'll go in the JAL lounge which Virgin Atlantic use.

Swiss lounge is much better than JAL (Virgin). JAL lounge has no food other than crisps and nuts plus a very small booze selection. Anyone with Priority Pass will have a nice time visiting the small but lovely Swiss lounge. Only saving grace for JAL lounge is free wifi.
