18 - Card Choices?

Hello MSE users

I am basically wanting to know, what is the best possible CC I could hope to get (0% on purchases/cashback preferably) being 18 (almost 19).

Other info: Never don't a credit search/check, never applied for a CC, had a bank account in my name for about 3 years and never been overdrawn (always had money in the account, dunno if that is a factor?) and I currently have a mobile phone contract I pay for monthly by DD from my current account.

That is pretty much everything I can think of that is for/against my credit rating.

I realise you guys will not be able to give 100% accurate information but it would be interesting to know what the possible options you people think will be viable for me, is it worth me trying to get a 0% on purchases card/cashback card or am I aiming too high to start with?

First ensire you're on the Electoral Roll, and then ask your bank for a card.

If they refuse you, then approach a credit-builder card provider such as Aqua, Capital One, Vanquis etc.

At such a young age, and in the current credit crunch, don't waste your time applying for the 'better' cards just yet.

The most important piece of information you didn't tell us was your income. Do you work? Or are you at college? Are you a university student?

If you're a uni student you should be able to get a student credit card. If you work and have a regular income, I don't see why you won't be able to get a normal credit card (the phone contract you already have is a big bonus for your credit file). If you're at college/sixth form, or are unemployed, I doubt you'll be able to get one yet.

I am on the Electoral roll, do you mean a debit card from my bank or my banks "own brand" CC?

Thank you for your advise :)

LOL opps, that was a bit silly of me, sorry

I am currently employed full time, I clear between £850 to £950 every 4 weeks (Dependant on bonuses, but 850 is the basic without any bonuses)

    Thanks for your time

Your bank's own credit card :)
If you're registered for their online banking many banks will give you a decision straight away. Give that a go and let us know what you get!

    2. if you bank refused, try MBNA Standard MasterCard
    3. if MBNA refused, try Capital One Classic (92.99% guarantee you'll get this : )

I'd say it's more like a 0% guarantee. You need to be 21 to get a capital one card.

Nope. I got it when I turned 18. It's my first CC :p Maybe you were referring to the lower rate card which requires an excellent credit history.
  • Popped into the bank today for further advise, they advised that it would be hit and miss if I would be successful in going for their 0% card, so I just took out a normal CC (mainly for the purpose of building a good credit history)

Congrats! What limit did they give you?
  • Opps, I was sure I replied to this thread, sorry Skyrider007, for the record, they gave me a £2500 limit :)
