are there any genuine sales around?

were currently looking to replace a kitchen at our house & were shocked when after picking up a brochure at mfi yesterday that the prices were double (yes double) what they were just over a month ago. also an american freezer we were looking at in currys for £599 (delivered) again just over a month ago, now in their so called sale costs over £800 for the same item. how can retailers get away with conning the general public like this?
are there any genuine sales around at the moment, or are we better off waiting for the so called sales to end?

  • Not that i want to defend MFI at all but the fridge freezer in question is not available at currys, well the stainless steel one is but it costs bout £1400, they may look similar to the ones in currys but are a completely different make.

Yes you are right the prices are dearer than they were a couple of months ago ... but unfortunately its all above the law!

They get away with it because the four week period before the sale they charged full price for all stock (this is when they bump up the prices slightly)

  • hi callansdad, you misunderstood me, i was refering to two seperate sales in mfi & currys not just the mfi one.
i am also aware that they are perfectly entitled by law to do this, im just amazed that they are allowed to considering it amounts to ripping off the public by such drastic amounts.
time for a change in the law i think.
  • back to the original question : does anyone know of any genuine sale around?

I think John Lewis is genuine and they have an excellent reputation in terms of warranty and customer service. They do domestic appliances and kitchens.

best deals are usually in store in their clearance area - if you have one near you pop in and check it out. Most of the white good bargains have probably been sold but you should still be able get a deal on the kitchen. Good luck!

think on a lot of the sales the original prices get quoted as 'on sale in x% of stores at £x'
  • yes, thats right. it usually has in small print something along the lines of " this product was originally on sale at the higher price at our outermongolia branch between 1st & 20th july 2005"
its not fair of companies to be able to do this. in order to be advertised as a sale price items should of originally been on sale (at the advertised original price) at all or most brances for at least 26 weeks prior to the sale, otherwise its grossly unfair & misleading.
