Direct Line home insurance - cheaper to get a new policy!

Options
Had my renewal from Direct Line come through for my home insurance and it was considerably higher than last year at £354. Shopped around and got it with Norwich Union for £295. Out of interest, put my details into Direct Line's website and was quoted £262!

I rang them up and the lady said that if you do it online you get 25% as a new customer and 10% for having a motor policy with them. She said it was only supposed to be for the first year but that the website can't distinguish. She said they advise people who ring up to apply online for a new policy.

Norwich Union policy now cancelled :)

I've done this too, both for Home and Car Insurance with Direct Line. I 'phoned to check it was ok to do it (ie cancel the current policy and take out a new one online) and was told that lots of people do! Apparently, if you phone a particular number they will match the online price so you don't have to cancel etc. :rudolf:
  • I wonder how you find out what that number is?

The lady I spoke to said they were unable to do it over the phone so it obviously wasn't that number!!

If I remember correctly, don't call the renewal hotline number, but the priority customer number at the top of the policy doc. I mustn't forget to do this next time - then I can keep the same policy number etc.

Had exactly the same situation for my father in laws home insurance with Direct Line. The renewal seemed a bit on the high side so got a few internet quotes then got an on-line quote from Direct Line which worked out cheeper as a new policy, so just did it on line to save the money. I also phoned them and they said it was OK to do this.

Same with most companys i have found cheaper getting a renewal online, and dont forget going through cashback sites !

My Zurich renewal was £223 with £12,000 contents cover , renewed online through Rpoints got £45 cashback and the quote was £180 with £40,000 contents & unlimited building cover including cashback thats £88 difference and a hell of alot more cover !
  • Where does the 25% discount appear as I get as far as the quote page (after logging in to the website as I have motor insurance with them) and it does not have a 25% reduction. I am getting the 10% discount for buying online.
  • I'm not sure where the 25% appears - that's just what the lady on the phone said. As you say, the 10% shows up.

I think the 25% refers to the fact that you're classed as a new customer getting it through the website as there is no option to renew through the website. The 25% must refer to the difference between the online 'new' quote and the renewal quote sent through the post.
