Where to go for New Year???

I want to get away for 5-7 days from around 27th Dec. But can be flexible.
I fancy Dubai/Egypt/Morocco/Jordan. OH does not.
We've considered Iceland or Russia, but I'm worried we won't get to see the best attractions as it will be too chilly....
Any recommendations, 6 hours is the max for flight times as we only want to go for a week.
Also somewhere that will be culturally and historically interesting. Thanks:A

Thanks - I'll have a look. I did see that it's supposed to be a good place to go during December, but had never heard of it.:o

Are your choices because of wanting some heat, or just because they fit your other criteria? Marrakech might be good. Warm enough to swim in the pool in the morning or at least sightsee, with probably enough snow up in the mountains to ski in the afternoon.
I love Istanbul, it could be pretty chilly but otherwise it certainly ticks the interest boxes. Or what about Vilnius, Riga or Tallinn? I've heard they've had a problem with drunken British stag & hen weekenders, but I doubt that would be an issue at that time of year.
St Petersburg is fab & would be amazing at that time of year, but I'm not sure you have time to get a visa, it can be quite a lengthy procedure. It's so beautiful & I would happily spend a week wandering around the Hermitage, taking breaks for yummy cakes & hot chocolate. Or what about Vienna (you see I'm thinking along the ancient cake route now...:D )
Iceland is pretty cheap right now.
We were thinking of going on a short break with Icelandair which are supercheap at the mo. I've wanted to go for ages. I don't think the cold will stop you doing too much, they're geared up for it & everything carries on working. Not like here where you get a 19 hour motorway carpark because of a drop of snow! As long as you're wrapped up well the cold shouldn't stop you doing anything. 0 -
Thanks never enough. I think I'd like some sun, but I don't really mind, I just want to go somewhere new and interesting. I had thought of Vienna - so may take another look there. I've wanted to go to St Petersburg for years so should possibly just accept the cold. I hear that Moscow is not as nice, even though I think it looks lovely. $25 for a pint is a tad steep tho.

Moscow would be a beautiful place but imagine it's still a bureaucratic nightmare. Wouldn't stop me though

I have been to both St Petersburg & Moscow. They are both amazingly beautiful in places with so much history & loads going on. I did prefer St Petersburg, but it's hard to put my finger on why... I guess I just generally felt more comfortable there.
I'm very keen to go back, but there are so many places I want to go to for the first time!
