Urgent help Dvd rewriter

I really badly want to buy a dvd rewriter but i need to know all the information about what they do and how they work. My computer is a dell dimension 2400 series and i believe that i dont have the ability to write dvd's as the program that came with it says i cant. I would like to buy an external one at the cheapest price. I need to know absolutely everything there is needed to know about buying one and how they connect etc. I would buy an internal one but need to know how to do it etc.

  • Why an external one ?....you could just change the cd rom or cd writer you have now to a dvd writer. Just swap the drives over in your case. Then all you need is Nero 6, thats what I use and it does everything I want it to. The DVD writer might come with a cut down version of Nero. I have a LG GSA 416b and it writes at 16X records to all formats even dvd ram. I payed £35 about 6 months ago.

    sorry for the long link.

£55 will get you an external however you really need usb 2.0 to make full use of it.

as mentioned an internal one is probably better unless you REALLY want in external. £28 will get you an internal one.

on the same site they sell an older version of nero for £2.99 at the moment.

you may find the prices cheaper somewhere else, i didnt search, i use bigpockets as they are quite good.

usb is the little telephone like plugs in your pc, it just plugs in and wayhay away you go ( if using windows xp)

internal one is very easy, open you computer case, if you have a sare space underneath your existing dvd/cd player you can just slot the new one in, you will see you have a power supply at the top back of your pc, there will be a spare connector for your dvd rw, you will also find your cd/dvd player has a thin wide connector, it should have a further black rectangled connector which you connect to your new dvd rw. and if you intend using the new dvdrw as your primary drive for dvd/cd then dont forget to change the jumper settings on your cd/dvd player ( on the back of the player will have a rectangle with 6 pins ( small) and a bit of plastic covering 2 pins, the insteructions for making the cd.dvd player into a slave drive should already be shown on the back so just remove the plastic bit and place over the 2 pins it tells you to..

tighten up the case and turn on.

im sure someone will word it far better than me, having re read it it may sound abit confusing without piccies.

  • YES, Take the side(s) off your pc case and then earth yourself by touching something to ground ie the nearest radiator.

Just disconnect the old drive power cable, then the IDE ribbon cable. You might have to undo 4 screws that hold the drive in the computer case, then just connect the new DVD Writer the same as the old drive. NOTE that on the back of the old drive there will be a little spade type connector this is called a jumper, look at where the jumper is set (Master, Slave or Cable Select) and set the jumper on the new drive the same.

Thats it, then just switch on the pc, and windows will auto detect the new hardware. You should then install the new writing program that came with the new drive or another writing program, and away you go.
