Coventry city centre hotel

Options
Does anyone know a really nice and central (near cathedral?) hotel or bed and breakfast in Coventry other than the Ramada?
I've looked on tripadvisor and nothing remarkable coming up:confused:

Was just about to suggest the Ibis. Just a short walk to the city centre. They are also in the process of building a Travelodge right by the Godiva statue in the city centre. I honestly dont know when it will be opening though.

  • The Leofric Hotel is in the precinct, and there's the Brittania Hotel in the city centre. These are both less than 1 minute either side of the cathedral. I haven't stayed in them, so can't comment or prices or quality, but shouldn't be too difficult to find reviews know you know the names.

Can say avoid the Formula 1 next door to the Ibis (which is about a 5 minute walk from the cathedral). Very basic, shared bathrooms, unpleasant staff.
some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it :)

Leofric is currently closed, been bought by Travelodge and is being renovated to open in May 2009 as such.... Britannia is ok, fairly basic and 1980s style, Ibis you know what your going to get....

I've said it before - I walk around with my eyes closed! It's right next door to Primark as well, how could I not have noticed that? :p

  • Does it have to be right in the middle of Coventry?
The problem you will have is some/many of the err charming inhabitants of the city have little or no regard to property so........ If it's a possibility I'd choose to stay eg Coventry side of Leamington and travel in.:T
Or there is a brand new Travelodge RIGHT in the absolute centre of Leamington.
Plenty of other choice there and by car into Cov iis about 10 mins outside rush hour.
Post back if you want more info.:D
  • Oh and I forgot to say, in your post i think you asked for "really nice" place.... The words "really nice" don't actually fit together with Coventry in any way shape or form! As to the Brittannia.... I guess it depends on what you think is nice. I wouldn't put an unwelcome guest there!
Also, the Ibis is indeed a walk from the cathedral etc PROVIDED you are fit! Not just around the corner by any means. If you're all young and raring to go it's a possibility but not in the nicest part of the City (IF there is such a thing!).:rotfl:

As a former resident of Coventry, that news about the Leofric comes as a bit of a shock. That used to be a very prestigious and classy hotel. All the famous stars who were appearing at the Coventry Theatre (also now gone) used to stay there, and its restaurant was one of the best in town. My wife and I had an excellent dinner there back in 1972 to celebrate our engagement. The Leofric now a Travel-Lodge and Owen Owen now a Primark, how the mighty have fallen!
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

I am a Coventry Kid too and I remember how prestigious the Leofric was. Many of the performers from the Coventry Theatre (Hippodrome) stayed at the Smithfield Hotel, opposite the theatre. Peter Butterworth, of 'Carry On' fame, sadly died there.

Anyway, I digress. There is another possibility in Coventry if it doesn't have to be central. There is a hotel at the Ricoh now, which looks ok. http://www.71rooms.co.uk/accommodation.htm
