Advice on pine-clad ceiling needed!

Hi all:
We are looking to refit our bathroom and we have an existing pine-clad ceiling.
I don't dislike it that much but my wife hates it. I really don't want to go to the bother of replacing or covering it, so we settled on painting it.
It hasn't been looked after at all for a number of years - how is best to prepare it for painting?
I was thinking that the knots might benefit from knotting solution, but then I thought the whole thing could do with sealing prior to painting as well.
Any advice please?
Many thanks
Steve

I had a pine ceiling in my kitchen, all I did was gave it a good wipe down and painted it with a couple of coats of white gloss. I did a year ago and it still looks much better than the pine colour.0

I had a pine clad ceiling in the cloakroom of my last home & I just sanded it lightly then painted it with eggshell paint. Perfect result.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
