Asbestos - How do I tell how serious it is?

I saw a home buyers report today of a house built in 1977 (survey said 1970?) there were at least 4 mentions of the A word...
It really is not that big a deal to get a specialist in to remove the stuff just see it as a job that needs to be done, like any other in home ownership., NEVER EVER attemp to move the stuff yourself.Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!0 -
Thanks for everyone's replies.
I have lived in the flat as a tenant for 6 years, so am getting a discount of 22,000 off the purchase price, which is why I am buying.
I have asked the Council for advice and they have been vague, but said they will get back to me.
I emailed the Asbestos Watchdog site, which looks really useful. I'll see what they say.
This is my first time buying and the only chance I have of getting into the housing market. The flat is in a great location and has a lot going for it, although needs a new kitchen, hence the worry over asbestos.
I'm just concerned about this affecting the future sale of the property.
I will wait to here from Asbestos Watchdog.
Thanks a lot.

I would have thought the council had a legal obligation to provide you the information you require, after all at this time it is still their property.
I should think that the council should provide you with details on what type of asbestos was installed and at what quantity, even if they had to get someone in at their costs to provide those details.
I too seen the TV prog where flat buyers were suddenly hit with a maintenance charge which was in the thousands, so make sure your solicitor checks out what you can be charged for or else that £20000 saving you could be making could be clawed back by the council for other charges later.Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
