So Ive been looking at OH's christmas present, and decided to finally get him a DVD recorder. As I know he desperately wants one (plus our sky+ box is full of his stuff and I want space!! Lol)
BUT, he would really like to finally get rid of all his VHS's that he made as a kid (he used to tape all the video highlights of his favourite team for the season) and he has LOTS at his mums.
Now Ive looked at vhs / dvd combos and Ive seen a really nice one with a hard drive (which Id want so we could edit out things) BUT its not cheap.
Was thinking yesterday and we have a really nice VHS players already that he spent quite a bit on a few years ago, so wondered if I could keep this and just get a DVD recorder.
Is it possible for me to plus the existing VHS into the new dvd recorder (has a scart socket on the back of the VHS) and just record from the VHS onto the hard drive in the DVD recorder, edit it, the burn to disc?
Also Im assuming most/if not all DVD recorders can record off the sky+ box??
Im just not good at these things, so I need advice!! Help!

Should record from any VHS as long as it's not commercially protected.

we are busy doing that at the mo.. we are transfering all our family videos to dvd, we have a dvd/hd recorder you dont need to record to hd then burn to disc you can just record straight to disc we are using scart , we tried the red/white and yellow leads like u would use when recording from a camcorder but couldnt get it to work, i find the only downfall is time consuming but we're having a laugh watching the kids from 5-10yrs ago

barjam, to be honest I want to record to the hard drive first as apparently theres a lot of crap that needs editing out!! (adverts etc).
Can you go from vhs to hard drive on yours?
And am I right in assuming your going scart to scart from the vhs to dvd recorder?
Thanks to both for answers tho!Green and White Barmy Army!0 -

Yes I have done the same. Dont get a combined dvd vhs recorder just get a dvd recorder with a hard drive and use you other VHS They might not be as much cost wise. Plus you can record and edit TV as and when you want. The only thing I would say is , if it is really important do a double copy as DVD s sometimes have the habit of not playing or getting corrupted in some way.The measure of love is love without measure0

Hi John, I think we would keep the videos we just want a way to play them as I reckon in a few years vhs will completely vanish!
Went into panasonic shop today and they told me not to bother with the combi and just get a hard drive recorder. She reccomended 2, one had the ability to do serise link but once I explained we had sky + she told me to go for the cheaper one. Which I have now found online for £160
Christmas just got ALOT cheaper
