DVD Recorder. What discs to use

A friend has bought a panasonic dvd recorder for christmas and has recorded on Sony DVD-RW discs, which play fine on that recorder but won't play on any other dvd player (including mine).
I appreciate that DVD-R discs are more likely to be compatable but he would like to record on a re-usable disc, watch it in bed and record over it the next day.
Can anyone recommend a make or type of disc that would overcome his problem?

Nope.
It is nothing to do with the disk and everything to do with the DVD-player. Most will play DVD-R or DVD+R disks, but very few will play DVD-RW or +RW disks (and there is only one I am aware of which will play DVD-RAM disks).
Incidentally, for most recording I would recommend using DVD-RAM disks if your player is compatible with them (I believe most Panasonics are). With RAM disks you can watch things which are still recording.0 -
However, if you tell your friend to search the make/model of his DVD players here:

...then it will tell you what disks are compatible.0 -
With DVD recorders, if you use DVD-RW or DVD+RW can you add programs to the disk as you want or do you need to wipe it and start again?0

Did he "Finalise" the disc, before he gave it to you ? if he has not then it will play on any dvd recorder, but not a dvd player.
I use Verbatim DVD-RW X6, but to play them in my other dvd players I must finalise the disc. I have a Sony HDX710 Freeview/Hdisc/DVD Recorder. I read here somewhere that Sainsburys are doing Verbatim DVD-RW X4 at good prices.0
