I got PC cillin 2000 free from the Halifax but they no longer give this software free but at a reduced price for customers. I have it running on my Windows 98 machine. I have now bought another computer which has Windows XP from Dell which has Norton free with it but it no longer updates unless i pay a subscription. Whereas with PC cillin 2000 you don't have to pay for updates as they are free for the life of the product.

Does anyone know if I can have the same copy of PC cillin running on 2 machines so that I do not have to buy another copy?

Just for the record, according to PC-cillin website only PC cillin 2000 offers updates. The new versions do not. So I think pc cillin 2000 is a real bargain!
  • Another completely free product which I haven't seen listed on here yet is avast antivirus.

    https://www.avast.com

They offer a free version to home users, and as long as you don't use it commercially, you get lifetime free virus updates.

It also scans your incoming and outgoing emails :D

Seems excellent...I have used AVG ..you have to 'download' quite frequently. however Avast does it automatically when you are on line, without BB it takes about 5 mins for a programme update and less than 2 mins to update the virus file. It has other features also.
    I rate it very highly.

I updated from win98 to XP but I think I had to go back to Halifax website to download the xp version of Trend PC- cillin which was still free at that time.
In fact if you look further back on this thread other people say that trend 2000 does`nt work with XP.
  • help please!- i'm a Win95 user!

after a look at all the postings i downloaded some stuff from "StopSign", whose anti-virus service is called "EAnthology" .

they seem to have given me some stuff, but want subscription for other stuff.

i've apparently got their Threat Scanner and Popup Blocker, but when I tried to get the Email Sensor and Download Guard, a message said I needed to download something from Microsoft called, wait for it..."Winsock 2"- i couldn't find this on this Microsoft site.

All i want is a bit of standard protection- for free, of course! Any suggestions? Should I scrap this StopSign stuff and start again elsewhere?

    Thanks
