Switching to Alliance & Leicester from Barclays?

Options
I have been a barclays customer for the last 9yrs and I've never had any problems with them.

After reading the best Current Account Article I am considering making the switch. The 8.5% AER on the first £2500 sounds very attractive considering the highest paying savings accounts seem to only be around 6% and they may drop further.

I could also earn £50 cashback by going via quidco and have a few friends who could be interested so I could make a further £25 for each referral.

Sounds good to me. I do have a few other questions regarding this if I may.

1. Can I still keep my Barclays Current account open? I have a CDL of £8k with them so would I need to keep it? Does opening an A&L account immediately shut down my existing account?

2. Can you pay money into A&L via the Post Office or via other banks?

You can certainly pay in at Post Offices - if you use your A&L Debit Card to pay in cash, as opposed to a paying in slip, the deposit appears immediately as cleared funds in your A&L account.
