My daughter is going on hols with friends - help!

My 17 year old daughter and her friends are planning a holiday next summer for after their A-levels and I would appreciate some advice (some are 18 already). They would like a 3 bedroomed apartment with a kitchenette (there are 5 of them) for one week commencing 26th June 2009 (they have to be home early on 3rd July) and need to fly from a London airport.

I'm still young enough to remember that what they are looking for on a holiday is very different to the type of holiday I want now ( ) but any advice from you lovely people would be greatly appreciated!

My main questions are:

Where is good (and cheap) for beaches and nightlife at the moment?
Where should she avoid like the plague?
Who is a good company to book through so that there is someone on hand if they run into a problem?

Thanks in advance

  • I'd say avoid Kavos, although it is full of 18 year old Brits - so they may have fun. I just think there's much more beautiful places to go.

You can get into mischief wherever you go, but I've been to Ibiza, Magaluf and Benidorm (for a weekend henny) and they aren't as bad as folk make out or don't have to be as wild as what you see on the 'Uncovered' series and we went with twentys and club 18-30. I'm 27 now but would still go back to San Antonio. The Canary Islands might be a wee bit quieter, I'm not sure.
Some places in Greece I would stay clear of and everytime we've booked a girls holiday our travel agent said they wouldn't send lassies to Faliraki.

Wherever she goes make sure she gets adequate insurance - many won't insure unaccompanied under 18s, but there are plenty that do if you google.

Many kids fly away after their 'A' levels. Often going to the same hotels as those the year before. Peer recommendation 's always carry more fun than boring parents.
Mine went to Kos, one of six girls, they had a super time. They knew it was going to be a basic hotel. But had a list of places to visit. Made sure she took lots of sun cream, waste of time!! never got into the day light.

I wouldnt be booking anything that wasnt in a 3 month timeframe!. Half will pull out/back out by next year anyway. When you are that age, 1 month is a long time ahead, never mind 7 or 8 ! so much can change, they can fall out, get boyfriends etc etc.
I know, Ive got one !
  • Check out that they're old enough to be in the apartment, some companies won't rent to younger people without someone in the party being over 21.

Have to agree with this. If they do book now they either need to pay for the holiday in full or if they only pay the deposit now someone (an adult) need to collect the balance at the same time and put it into a saving accounts until thge balance is due. This was the majority don't loose out if 1 or 2 decide to drop out.

get the family to sit and watch this first, then decide if she can go abroad:

j/k, but it has put me off allowing my daughter to away at such a young age!!
  • Mallorca is lovely but magaluf is not so great - there are much better resorts such as palma nova which is only down the road from magaluf but it's much better (still a bit club 18-30 but it has smartened itself up recently

Mallorca has something to offer for them all, if they like chic shops then Palma has that, if they like the quiet resorts then places like portal nous can offer them that too, nightclubs and british breakfasts can be found in magaluf / palma nova etc
