Dla

Does any body know the answer to this question.
My husband is type 11 diabetic and was controlled by tablet and diet. he has now had to go onto insulin injections. His job is as a PSV mechanic, he would normally go out on breakdowns and work shifts.

Because he has gone onto injections this means he has now lost his PSV licence so will not be able to do breakdowns etc so he will be taken of the shift work so will end up losing money.

Would he be able to claim DLA to make up the shortfall?? Thanks.

Didn't want to read and run. I think to claim DLA you are required to have care needs or mobility needs or both. I have a friend who is now insulin dependant and he was a taxi driver and his licence was taken from him he ended up having to find other suitable employment. Hopefully someone will be along soon who has a bit more knowledge of DLA requirements.

  • Your financial situation is not taken into account when assessing for DLA, only care and mobility needs. So even if you put on the form that your husband's illness had caused him to lose a large portion of his income, this wouldn't help your claim at all unless you explained how and why.

Hi, I am a DLA/AA decision maker - I can confirm that income bears no relevence when making a DLA claim.

Give the benefit enquiry line a ring on 0800 882200 - they have details on all disability related benefits and if there is one out there that will help, they will know about it ;)

    Good luck!
  • Ok, It sonds unlikey that he wil qualify for either the care or mobility component of DLA (see this link for eligability criteria http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/DisabledPeople/FinancialSupport/DisabilityLivingAllowance/DG_10011816 ).

However, as he is managing to stay in work (all be it at a pay cut) it is possible that he could be entitled to the access to work scheme (which helps support disabled people stay in employment by making reasonable adjustments) or that he would be entitled to disabled tax credits which helps to make up a short fall in earnings, (this may be a long shot if he has not been on benefits).

other things he should be entitled to if he's not already got them: free bus pass if he has lost his driving licence (contact local council) free prescriptions.

I agree he needs a benefits check up to find out what he is eligable for.
get some professional, independant advice eg from the CAB, DIAL etc.
