Lost Files After Recovery

Hi
I run Vista Business and until last week all was fine.
I got a notice of updates being available, which I downloaded
I'm not sure what happened but after a restart my computer stayed on the opening screen with the bars running accross. After much trying, I had no choice but to restore.
I did this with no problems until I found some of my files are missing.
Most I am not bothered about but I have two back up's for financial programs that are now missing, including MS money. I always backed up after using the program, but all my back up files are now showing from a few months ago, I presume from what was on my restore file.
Is there anyway of recovering the more recent two back up files or have they been overwritten after the restore.
From now on I am backing up as before but, I am now using a USB memory stick and an on line back up service.
Thought I would just ask though.
Thanks
Martin
