Toshiba Laptop Freezing

Hi
My 8 month old Toshiba Equium Laptop has developed a fault. Its under warranty from Dixons however before returning it wondered if anyone has advice on how I might fix the fault rather than return it? The problem which began about a week ago is the machine keeps freezing if I let it idle for anymore than 5 minutes, it wont respond to any command cant close it or end anything with CTRL+ALT+DELETE so have to crash it with the power button.
This happens every time I leave it either connected to Google homepage or any web page also happens when not signed on to internet(broadband) and simply switched on and doing nothing, but still freezes/hangs.
I have not installed any new software and Norton anti virus is up to date as are windows updates.
The laptop can be returned under warranty but am hoping for something that I could do rather than have the hassle of sending it back.
The operating system is Vista, and its an intel dual core processor, I have run Toshiba Assist scan for problems and no problems have been found. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

sounds like possibly a screensaver or power saver option on the laptop ??Ex forum ambassador

Thanks Browntoa, I have changed the power settings to Never sleep & Never to shut down screen.
Will leave it running for 10 minutes or so without touching it and see if that makes a difference.0 -
so far so good, that's been almost 20 minutes and still working.
Thanks again Browntoa

Check the Event viewer / Reliability and Performance monitor to see if you can isolate the problem to a specific event.
You may also want to run the inbuilt memory utility if Browntoa`s suggestion does not work.Always follow the path of least resistance.0 -
If it's working when left on, it's pretty much guaranteed that the problem is a driver issue. See if there's any updated drivers on the Toshiba site.0

Unfortunately Laptop is freezing again. I have opened Event viewer/Reliability & Performance monitor as you suggested. Not too sure what I'm looking at here however found several faults in "Application Failures" which says iexplore.exe stopped responding. In "Miscellaneous Failures" Disruptive Shutdown (several times) I'm assuming that's when I crashed it to switch off?
Will shut it down and run Memory Diagnostic Tool
Thanks0 -

Have run Diagnostics Tool and no problem found, however it froze after the diagnostics tool finished and yet again had to crash laptop by holding down power button, guess I should return it to Dixons....0 -
Have you run through the malware sticky at the top of the techie forum? Up to date antivirus / scanned with malwarebytes / spybot search and destroy / similar?
