Cancelled Hol - Refund of Airport Taxes

Hope one of you Moneysavers out there can help me with a query pls on travel insurance and its applicability to airport taxes and the travel agent.

We were due to travel to Thailand in February but had to cancel as I broke my leg about a week before the departure date. After a few months we got the payout from our travel insurer but it was less than we expected by about £350, and was advised by the insurer that "the policy does not extend to cover passenger, and departure taxes as these are recoverable from the travel agent or carrier". We approached our travel agent online who advised that they would refund the amount for taxes.

However this was five months ago and despite much chasing we have yet to be refunded the amount for the taxes from ur cancelled holiday. Given this does anyone know the law with regard to refund of airport taxes from the travel agent on cancelled holidays?

We just want to make sure we fully understand our rights. Also any advice anyone has to speed things up (and even get some interest/compensation) as a result of the large delay then would be gratefully received. It is now over 9 months since we cancelled our holiday!!

Cheers all

  • The refund of taxes can take much longer than people expect, often 6+ months.

However, in your case, it sounds like your Travel Agent is taking the pith. I've seen instances (rarely) where it has taken this long, but they should have clearly told you the reasons for the delay, and kept you informed. They are probably hoping you go away if they ignore you long enough.

I would start by sending them a strongly worded letter giving them 28 days to respond and justify the delay, or to refund you, otherwise you will start a claim in the small claims court (which isn't as daunting as it sounds, and plenty of people on here will help you with the process).
