How to send a fax from PC?

Hello,

I need to send a document by fax but don't have a fax machine. The recipient only has a fax machine and no email.

Someone told me it is possible to download free software which enables you to send a fax for free from your PC.

Please does anyone know if this would work for sending a scanned in document and if so, any recommended place to obtain the software from?

I only plan to send a couple of faxes so probably wouldn't want anything that involved signing up for a subscription otherwise it will be a trip to a high street shop....

Many thanks in advance for any advice on this.

If you are using Windows XP, you already have a fax module. If I recall right, go to Start, Accessories, Communication and you should see it. It installs as a print option i.e. click to print whatever you want to fax and choose the fax option as the printer, if you see what I mean.

If you have already upgraded to Vista Home or Premium like me, then you no longer have a built-in fax facility. I bought SnappyFax which works well.(www.snappyfax.com) I'm not aware of any free fax software though there are some programs which allow you send e-mails as faxes via premium numbers. Someone else will have to tell you more about those.

    Hope this helps.

Some email services provide email to fax service at a cost. Tried your local shops.
    Heard of "Slo-mail" ?
  • If you have an account with Moneybookers (an online payment system sort of like Paypal), you can send faxes through them for a fairly reasonable cost.

Have sent faxes to overseas fax machines through them in the past with no probs.
  • Hi

Efax has a 30 day free trial which may be useful for you

Never used them before but as it's free then it's worth a try.

BTW my local library only charges 10p for sending faxes. Yours might do the same, it's worth asking. Nothing ventured nothing gained and all that.
