Asda Credit card fees

I've just had my new statement and a nice letter telling me I didnt pay the bill last time and charging me £12 plus interest.
Due date was 4/11/08.
I paid online on the 31/10/08 bank reckons upto 3 days for the transaction to occur so the payment should have arrived by 2/11/08 at the latest.
Back of the credit card statement says 5 days!??
Interest was added 9/11/08 no mention of the payment at all.
Simplest way is to phone them but then I see that they'll charge me 10p per min for the privledge.

How long can they claim it takes to process an instant payment? Surely this just them noticing that they've had the payment?

Before I start writing my snotty letter do I have a fair gripe and any advice?

Was the payment by BACS? Depending on your bank, and if it was by BACS, it would have arrived on 4/11 or 5/11 at the latest.

  • With today's modern technology, payments really shouldn't take so long to process.

Most banks have actually recently started to introduce the faster payments system whereby banks and credit cards are credited within hours rather than days - long over due I think. I made a paymnet fro mmy HSBC account to Amex last week and it was credited same day.

31 oct was a friday .. it take 3/4 working days so would be the 5th or 6th Nov.

No mention of 'working days' on the statement and by that logic the Halifax would require payment nearly 2 weeks before the due date.
I'm just looking for ome ammo before I start my attack on them.

I think most people understand that banks do not process BACS over the weekend

Most banks operate on a working day procedure. Your best bet is not to write any form of snotty correspondence & call them up and say you made a mistake in calculating the days. Then see if they can offer a gesture of goodwill to refund the late charge.

Unfortunately the interest will stick & you'll have to put that down to experience.

Well obviously I was more than a little disappointed by the roll over and die responses on here, which leaves me wondering what the card companies are getting away with if folk think you cant challenge them?

So to update the situation, I ignored the advice and wrote the snotty letter suggesting an error on their part or criminal intervention.

My new statement has arrived today refunding the late payment fee and the interest I was charged.

I think its a Churchill quote and I've always followed it.
    "Never, never, never surrender".
