then it shouldn't have been authorised the second time ... isn't that the point of cancelling a card ... so it can't be used again?

It's not 'authorised'. As we established early in the thread it's a recurring payment .... very different. Bad enough to get them cancelled if you set it up yourself ...... much worse if it's done by someone else or, as appears in this case, inadvertently.

As my previous response ....... just how would they know that? It's a comment you could make for any fraud ..... I'd copyright it!
You said: A DC transaction doesn't carry a name for secondary verification.
I said: They should know better

It doesn't take Einstein to recognise that if there is no Secondary Verification as you so aptly describe it, then there will be problems. The banks can fix this, whereas customers cannot. When the lack of secondary verification causes a problem, it can be a customer knowingly committing a fraud by making a transaction which he denies or it can be mistaken ID when a transaction gets attributed to the wrong account. It is not on to give innocent customers a hard time if there are no systems in place to guard against the mistake.
After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?
  • Having a nightmare with the Halifax, another payment has come out, and the Halifax have twice closed down the fraud case. I am back on the phone to them again and have been told I have to close down the account, go through a credit check to open a new one and then ring all the companies like BT, SKy etc to set up my direct debits. I rang TV X who have agreed that this account was set up fraudently and they say they have now cancelled it but that I have to go through the Visa Debit chargeback scheme, I mentioned this on the phone to the Halifax and they have said I have to wait two weeks for the fraud team AGAIN!!

I had to ring them originally and tell them what a recurring debit card payment was, they hadn't heard of it.

I don't want to close and reopen the account in the mouth of Xmas as knowing my luck there will be a !!!! up at work and I won't get paid.

Can anyone give me some advice? Pulling my hair out here big time, couldn't sleep last night for worrying about, talk about at their mercy.
  • I would open another account with another bank , and then if things are not resolved , move over . I would then keep the Halifax account 'live' until this is resolved.

Suggest you put it in perspective. Up to now it's been £9.99 per annum ..... so it's irritating but hardly much more than that?

In particular as TV X (they were the problem) have now conceded defeat - so there shouldn't be further issues. So you leave the account where it is (Halifax are relatively guilt free in this) but get Halifax to issue a chargeback form in respect of the (2 or 3?) payments fraudulently taken.

  • ...except it is Lloyds TSB not Halifax! My brother has had exactly the same problem with £9.99 going out EVERY month, despite having destroyed his card and been sent a new one. However, we cannot find a contact telephone number for Portland Enterprises CI Ltd or indeed for the trading company Television X.
Could somebody either drop me a pm or reply to this with the contact number?
    Many thanks,
    Pookie

To me Halifax have been next to useless, if it is a fraudulent payment it should have been dealt with by them rather than palming the customer off back to the company. The poster tried to get them to sort out the problem, and they failed. It is not their fault that Halifax's system can't cope with canceling the payment, I would advise them to write a letter to Halifax headed 'complaint' as this will be dealt with by their complaints team rather than staff who do not have the authority to do very much. I would suggest that they ask for the money to be credited to their account immediately rather than wait for their fraud department, they can do this even though they claim that they can't as the amount is not substantial. I would also ask for a small amount, say £10, to cover the cost of the calls made.
