Help with DirectX please.

I'm trying to put The Sims 2 game on the PC for my daughter, and all goes well untill i get a pop up box saying that it can't find DirectX and all you can do is quit. I have since downloaded the latest Directx software from the official website but it's made no difference, i still get the same problem. Perhaps i haven't downloaded it to the right place on my computer, (it didn't say where to save it), at the moment it is on the desktop?, should i try and put it somewhere else, or shall i delete it and download it again but to somewhere else. Can anyone point me in the right direction please.

Then there is a heading called: How do I check that DirectX is properly installed?
