how do i get a default off my experian account
in 2005 i had an incorrect bill from my phone provider, after arguing with them i thought it was settled and i never heard another thing from them.
recently i went on to my experian account and my until now perfect record has a default on it, this is devastating news, i've recently saved up enough money for a deposit on my first flat and was just waiting for the market to change before jumping in.
what appears has happened is a second company brought my account from the phone company and they posted this incorrect default with experian, i rang them and they simply say take it up with the phone company, but i've been through all this with then in 2005
it seems so unfair that a company i've never had any dealing with can sink my hope of buying a house over an incorrect debt from an incompetent mobile phone company

First thing you should do is put a note on your credit file that the default is in dispute as an earlier mistake by the phone company had resulted in a debt which was not owed being sold on to the DCA.
This will make sure that any credit check that is done on your account will be flagged as having extra information on it so an automated credit check will require manual intervention.
As this company has put the default on your credit file, they are the ones that will need to write to all the credit reference agencies to get it removed. If you have proof that they had made a mistake then send that to them and that should be the end of it. If not, you will need to write to this company stating that they have put a default on your credit file for a debt you do not owe. You expect them to remove it with immediate effect as they are in breach of the Data protection act. If you search the debt free wannabe board, there are a few threads where people have tried to get a default removed. You should have an easier time of it if there was no debt to begin with and just a mistake on the phone company's behalf. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

thanks George,
i will send a letter to them saying that, any advice to what job title i should address the letter to, their call centre staff are pretty useless and it would be better to get someone to take ownership of this problem
i will have another look for those treads you mentioned

When i send a letter of complaint, i always send it to the head office. Not sure who your phone provider is, but their head office address should not be difficult to find. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

not sure if this one will apply if you don't have proof that the debt is settled or not owed.
