is this all the same garage?

£1000k per MOT is ballcocks in my opinion.

over the past few years you could have bought a new car for that
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

Still haven't got a price for the repairs but the garage has just phoned to say when they opened the bonnet they found a dead rat (!) which has eaten through most of the drive belts.

UUgh - how weird is this!

its very wierd, infact i would say to wierd. ive heard of foxes biting brake lines and drinking brake fluid but rats eating timing belt, sounds a bit far fetched to be honest. does the timing belt on your car not have a cover to protect it.
seriously i think they are spinning you a line, they know how much they have made from you in the past, this sounds like a bit of a con. i may be wrong.but from them charging a grand every year at MOT time then i wouldnever go back to them.

Well the grand total has been calculated, and it is £750 which breaks down as about £200 for stripping down the engine, replacing the drive belt and roadtesting for safety, plus about £550 to get it through the MOT as it has some problems with the suspension and the alignment.

This is obviously roughly what we think the car is worth. (The damage to the bodywork will be fixed separately and paid by the other driver's insurers by the way). However, as times are a bit uncertain at the moment, and we'd rather not fork out several thousand for a new car at least for the next 6 months until we see what's happening with job situation/economy, etc, we're going to have the repairs done and put the new purchase off for another day.

    Thanks for all the advice.
