HELP-Which DVDR to buy?

Slightly surprising that the Samsung doesn't have Timeslip -- I have the older DVDR-100E and it does have -RAM writing and Timeslip technology.

The LiteOn is one of the other leaders in this sub-£100 bracket. It has a big pile of features (which you can decide for yourself if useful) and generally performs quite well.

EDIT: The Samsung gets stranger. It is a -RAM recorder:

BUT according to the website it does NOT do Timeslip (although it does apparently play DiVX files which is a nice touch). This seems very odd, why make a -RAM recorder, based on a Panasonic design, and then disable Timeslip?

That is very interesting and very bizarre...

You've helped me decide NOT to go for SKY+, I already begrudge the amount they charge us so why on earth was I thinking of giving them more???????????

I hate giving money to Mr Murdoch, we had to change to Sky when Ondigital went bust, but now we've got the Topfield we don't have to. Sky costs a fortune and we hardly watched any of their programs, so we've happy now with Freeview, it suits us much better and you still get E4.
Has anyone ever tried to cancel Sky??? Took me over 45 minutes to convince them that I didn't want it anymore.

    Al.

Worth noting though, that if you already have premium channels you won't have to pay a subscription for sky+.

Looking at Samsung's current line-up, it looks as if the 119 is the base model -- models 120 and up do have the timeslip function.

So probably this is the stripped-down version with crippled firmware but similar hardware which Samsung can use to take on the Taiwanese. It's a common business practice but it annoys me that they can't just enable the functionality on the whole range rather than holding the customer to ransom in this way.

I have sky+ and the sports world as I do enjoy my football. However I have noticed that the sky planner is full of terrestial programmes.

I'm think of replacing sky with a twin tuner PVR and thus saving £36 per month. I can go down to the pub to watch when my team are playing, which isn't all that often anyway.

Would I need to get a new aerial. I can't pick up any terrestial pictures at the moment as I have to watch them through sky.

    Thanks

Probably. It's the usual story -- if your existing aerial can receive Channel 5 clearly then there is a good chance it'll be OK for DTT (no scientific basis for this theory but it seems to work in practice).

As I can't receive any channels clearly looks like I will then. It never worked when we first moved in 18 montha ago.

Any idea how much to have a decent digital ariel fitted ?
  • Hi
When we changed from Sky to our PVR, we didn't change aerials, we just plugged the old aerial into it. I believe we now have a better quality picture than we use to have with sky.

    Hope this helps
  • Go for the Panasonic I have had one for about a year It's excellant very good build quality, It does use DVD ram which mean the discs's can be re-recorded 100,000 times.
But can only be played back on a DVD ram player.
