Changing Payment Date for Hire Purchase Agreement

Hi,

I took out a hire purchase agreement for a new car. The Agreement is with ALD Automotive, and the current payment date is the 28th of the month. Recently the date my wages go into my bank has moved to the last day of the month, which means sometimes I don't have the money in the account to cover the payment without going into my overdraft.

I've asked all the other companies who take money out by Direct Debit to move the date back a couple of days, and they have been happy to do this (MBNA credit cards, NPower gas & electric, Nationwide Mortgage etc).

However when I phoned ALD Automotive to ask them to put it back a couple of days they said they only offer 3 payment dates, 14th, 21st or 28th, I asked if I could do 14th, as the money would be easily in my account by then, expecting them to push the next payment back to the 14th, but instead, they'd take a payment out on the 28th, and another out on the 14th, this would then continue to be the new payment date, meaning I'd end up paying twice in the space of 2 weeks.

Obviously I can't afford to pay two payments in the same month! So, is there anyway I can get them to push the payment date back, without ending up paying twice?

Any help much appreciated.

Ben

  • It sounds like this company stick to 3 payment dates for their direct debits.

Take a look at the conditions on your agreement to see if a change of payment date is covered in the terms?

The date may well be moved on to the 14th but there is usually a one off charge to cover the admin on this.

If you really need to do this and they still remain unhelpful tell them that you will complain to the Financial Ombudsman service as you believe they are not treating their customers fairly and make sure you get the name of whoever you speak to - that may get them to give you a better service.
