DVD player cheaper than £17.99?

Options
I'm looking to replace my extremely ancient DVD player....but as Ihardly use it, want to spend as little as possible. The cheapest i've seen is via a thread on this board to on with play.com delivered for £17.99......but with the sales etc, wondered if anyone knew of any cheaper ones? (or a little more, but made cheaper with an online code/voucher?)

Richer Sounds have quite a few DVD players for £14.95 in their clearance section.

Scroll down the page to see them.

These players are only avalable to buy in store, so you should check on the website or by phone the availablity of the players in your area.

If you go to Blockbusters, they are giving a "free" DVD player when you purchase a block of ten movie rentals for £35. You also get TWO months free online rentals.

Why would you spend so little on a DVD player, yet (probably) shell out £100's on the DVDs to play on it?

You really do get what you pay for and it's a false economy.
  • Cheap unbranded DVD players really are a false economy. Go for something like a Toshiba SD 140 or 150 - I picked up a brand new one for £25 just before Xmas - knocks the spots off the supermarket brands. Spending the price of one DVD on getting a better player makes a lot of sense.

I got a very cheap one ages ago and it brilliant. Brand ive never heard of
  • Toshiba one for £25 sounds like a steal to me. Some unbranded are ok, but some are a bit dodgy (picture quality iffy!) Aldi do a DVD / Divx player for £32 which seems a good deal to me?? Has anyone bought one of these from Aldi? For those not in the know Divx is a method of compression so a film basically fits on a cd. Alternatively you can get about 5 films on 1 DVD, and Divx players just give you a menu of the 5 films to choose from.

I'd HIGHLY recommend the Aldi one if you can get it. Got two and they're both superb. And for some reason have the same menus as a (modern) Toshiba.

I'd disagree totally with the "get a branded DVD player" argument. A lot of the branded ones are sourced from the same places as cheapo ones, and Those that aren't are not neccesarily better. You definately need to do your homework on them. Unfortunately it's hard to find reviews of the cheapo ones.

I've got a pacific 1002 (the original one) and a Medion DIVX player, both knock spots off the toshiba, sony and panasonic players I have either tried or still have. One toshiba got sent back twice and replaced with the pacific it was that bad (and expensive) in comparison.

But have you ever watched DVDs through decent DVD players?
Granted, if your TV isn't great a decent player isn't going to look much better, but it's very noticeable to me.

My DVD player output is considerably better than the output of a DVD recorder I bought from maplins.

You need to look at the jerkiness when panning, colour bleeding and less than vibrant colours.

Play something like Bugs Life or Toy Story through a cheap player and a expensive one and you'll notice the difference.

DivX DVD players are a bit hit and miss. Most of the time the audio is VBR and you get lip sync problems requiring the audio to be unpacked.
